EDF To Raise Gas And Electricity Prices
Energy giant EDF is to increase prices for householders by an average of 10.8%.
The rise, gas and electricity, around four times the rate of inflation, is set to be implemented on December 7.
EDF, which has 3.1 million customers and 5.5 million accounts overall, said its annual dual fuel bill was the lowest of the suppliers to have announced price rises so far.
Companies have blamed the changes on rising wholesale prices and increased running costs - especially for transporting gas and electricity to customers' homes - and the cost of energy efficiency programmes.
Martin Lawrence, EDF managing director of energy sourcing and customer supply, said: "We know that customers will not welcome this news and do not want to see prices going up.
"Our new prices will, however, be cheaper on average than those of all the other major suppliers which have announced standard price rises so far this autumn.
"We've taken extra measures to make sure the most vulnerable benefit from the best deals and we continue to help customers reduce their bills with energy efficiency measures."
Earlier this month Npower became the third of the so-called Big Six energy firms to confirm steep rises in its gas and electricity bills ahead of winter.
It said bills would increase by an average 8.8% for gas and 9.1% for electricity from November 26.
Just hours beforehand British Gas confirmed that its average dual fuel tariff would rise by 6% - or £80 annually - from November 16.
The Big Six - British Gas, EDF, E.On, NPower, Scottish Power and SSE - control 99% of the UK's domestic energy supplies.
E.ON is the only big supplier yet to announce price rises after it made a promise not to raise tariffs this year.
Last week the energy regulator Ofgem said it would make the market "simpler, clearer and fairer" for consumers.
The promise follows a call by the Prime Minister to energy giants to overhaul confusing tariff systems.
what do you think?

Here we go again, increased prices due to higher wholesale prices my ar*e, then they will then publish record profits next year. And how do they get away with it? Because we put up with it. If this happened in France (where it is only allowed to increase by about 2.5% per year) there would be riots in the street.

David Francis
Robert - the wholesale market is PART of the problem as there is virtually NO competition at all and W/S prices are higher than this time last year. I know because the company I work for purchases from the W/S market. The retail side also has it's major problems but don't dismiss the W/S side completely. I am sure that if the EU competiton dept did what it is there for, we would get a much fairer deal from the retailers.

dave
And as usual, the 'regulators' will do absolutely nothing.

Roger Siviter
They do what they are told by Global companies!

Nigel L
It is blatently obvious that the big six are running a cartel yet the so called regulators do nothing other than spout the same old garbage about switching to the best deal.

Dave Harrison
Nigel. Couldn't agree more. And to think we were told privatisation would lead to increased competition and lower prices. Instead it has allowed half a dozen companies to control & dictate energy prices to their advantage not the consumers

Dave Harrison
The fuel companies operate a cartel where once one puts up prices the rest follow with monotonous regularity time and time again. Be nice if one of them broke ranks and announce no price increases and invited the customers of the other companies to switch to them. That might lead to an interesting price war but it ain't going to happen.

Roger Siviter
No chance of it happening whatsoever. These cartels represent modern day slavery, they have a grip on the vital needs of a nation, should never have been allowed to happen, but I fear it will cost a lot of blood to free us from this sh'i'te!

john
The Cooperative Energy Group operate as a mutual society with no shareholders, try giving them a go, I am paying a lot less now than I did with my previous supplier Npower, it is easy to switch.

Roger Siviter
Thats very good advice John, I might add it's also worth looking at their banking arm?

t.bulgin
Ta, I have just switched from EDF.

These people only have one agenda and that's "Profit". They have no heart and certainly no soul, and all the crying we do will mean nothing to them. Those cowardly criminals at the top who make all these decisions, and then hide behind, and blame a system created by them are just worthless trash who need to realise that one day they might be stuck in the desert with the rest of us and we might just be the ones holding the water bottle. Maybe when people start dying through being left to freeze to death in their own homes, and their families start suing these companies, they might just start to get the message that although we are just another commodity to them, we DO have souls and we DO care about each other and our families!! Shame on them all!!.....And includes every single puppet who works within these companies for allowing it to happen...

ken w
EXACTLY, the puppets are the governments, past and present. these companies ARE running a cartel which is illegal.

Thomas Barker
Each winter in Britain 30,000 cold weather deaths!

ken w
hmmm, and that means 30,000 less pensions and winter payments saved. ABSOLUTE SCANDAL.

Ben Ralph
Just like the petrol companies. Quick to pass on price rises. Surprising how they never pass on price decreases as quickly....

t.bulgin
Yes, they blather on about 'delays' and such. Isn't this one of the things that Cameron says he will try and put an end to ?

John Smith
If u believe anything cameron says, a lot of people don't anymore!!

Michael Mcardle
why is that the government sit back and allow these energy companies to charge these exorbitant prices. we hear plenty of promises that they will come down hard and bring in legislation to prevent the profiteering but year after year prices go up and nothing is done. ofgem are a complete waste of time everybody knows it . this government let down the british electorate time after time . theyre an absolute disgrace. there has got to be something we as the majority can do against this dictatorship calling themselves a government. they are repeatedly failing the people they are supposed to be looking after. big changes are needede and quickly

ken w
ogem needs a rocket up its a rse. these companys are running a cartel which is illegal. about time a british government sorted these companies out, ( re-nationalise ) ?

john
The politicians thought that as the privatised energy market was working so well, they would remove the power of the regulator to regulate, surprise, surprise, the energy cartel have exploited this lack of regulation and are in a feeding frenzy, the French government wouldn't allow the sort of rises that are inflicted on the British, but maybe our leaders have been promised lucrative non-jobs on the boards of these thieving companies? that would explain why they aren't working in the best interests of their fellow countrymen.

Adrian Wagstaff
You'd think they'd be too afraid to after reading the other news story.

dave
Thanks to Maggie for selling off what belonged to British people.

Simon .
Well my comment starts of with "thieving" and ends with the work for illegitimate which orange won't allow.

Jamie Gibson
Did you know the government has imposed a 50% increase on obligatory measures on the companies of course the price will rise

shirley sutton
It's just greed and the watchdogs and government let hem get away with it every winter - disgusting when they make such huge profits

shirley sutton
Don't need simpler tariffs want lower prices and their profit margins capped they rob us blind every winter no matter what tarif you're on

Jonathan Goodwin-Self
90% of all suppliers are foreign firms owned by their Governments so we are the only country in the world like this. In Germany France and Spain prices are 80% cheaper than ours because our prices give them 100% of their profits. So all these foreign firms must now be closed down because an old UK firm tried to buy the French firm but they were banned by their Government. Labour and Conservative have allowed foreign firms to buy anything here so they are not really British Governments

How many people will migrate companies? Who actually holds power in this world? The government or those in fuel/energy companies?
