Ellen Page Comes Out As Gay In Vegas Speech

Ellen Page, who starred in the 2007 film Juno, has come out as gay.

Page, 26, made the announcement during an emotional address at a Human Rights Campaign conference in Las Vegas.

With her voice cracking at times, the Canadian actress said:"I'm here today because I am gay, and because maybe I can make a difference to help others have an easier and more hopeful time.

"I also do it selfishly, because I am tired of hiding and I am tired of lying by omission."

On several occasions members of the audience broke out in applause and rose to their feet.

The conference was attended by teachers and counsellors who work with young people who identify as lesbian, gay, transgender, bisexual or queer (LGTBQ).

Page shot to fame after playing pregnant teenager Juno in the 2007 film. She was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress, a Golden Globe Award and a Bafta for her performance.

She also starred alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in the 2010 film Inception.

During the eight-minute speech, the actress spoke of the pain she endured while hiding her sexuality.

"I suffered for years because I was scared to be out," she said.

"My spirit suffered, my mental health suffered and my relationships suffered.

"I'm standing here today, with all of you, on the other side of all that pain."

She said much more still needed to be done to overcome discrimination.

"There are too many kids out there suffering from bullying or rejection, or simply being mistreated because of who they are," she said.
