UK Dismisses Falklands Claims As 'Absurd'

Britain's ambassador to the UN has said Argentinian claims that the UK is militarising the Falkland Islands are "manifestly absurd".

On Friday Argentina said it had intelligence that a Vanguard submarine had been sent to the South Atlantic and demanded to know whether it was carrying warheads.

Sir Mark Lyall Grant said the Government did "not comment on the disposition of nuclear weapons, submarines etc".

But he said "nothing has changed in the UK's defence posture in recent months or recent years".

"Before 1982 there was a minimal defence presence in the Falkland Islands," he said.

"It is only because Argentina illegally invaded the Falkland Islands in 1982 that since then we had to increase our defence posture."

UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon has issued a statement expressing "concern about the increasingly strong exchanges" between the two governments.

After holding talks with Argentina's foreign minister Hector Timerman, he said the international body would be happy to help mediate the dispute if asked.

Sir Mark said the UK had been in the Falklands since before Argentina existed, and the islanders were entitled to self-determination under the UN charter.

Tensions between the two nations have been growing over recent months, with David Cameron and Argentinian president Cristina Kirchner trading barbs.

The UK has insisted that the deployment of one of its most modern destroyers, HMS Dauntless, to the region is merely routine.

But Mr Timerman told a news conference on Friday night: "Thus far the UK refuses to say whether it is true or not. Are there nuclear weapons or are there not?"

"The information Argentina has is that there are these nuclear weapons."

The accusation, made through a translator, came as Mr Timerman urged the UN to intervene in the long-running row over the islands.

He said Britain was using an "unjustified defence of self-determination" to maintain a military base on the Falklands, which allowed it to dominate the Atlantic.

"It is perhaps the last refuge of a declining empire," he told journalists in New York. "It is perhaps the last ocean that is controlled by the UK."

He said Britain had been "colonialist throughout (her) history", and should now follow the advice of Beatles legend John Lennon and "give peace a chance".

The Duke of Cambridge's arrival in the Falklands for a posting as an RAF search and rescue pilot has further infuriated Buenos Aires.

And there were protests after the website of local Falklands newspaper the Penguin News ran a photo of Mrs Kirchner labelled "bitch".

what do you think?

Very funny, but not up to your usual high standard Sarah. I think is doesn't matter whether Argentina is led by a woman or a man, they disort the truth and have no regard for the wishes of the Falkland islanders. The same can be said about Spain and Gibraltar, especially since Spain has two enclaves in Morocco at Ceuta and Melilla - I've been to Ceuta and it is a dump!

PATHETIC. I've been to "argent"ina, and believe me, it's hardly the land of silver, moreso the the land of krud. it's no wonder falklanders want nothiing to do with the hovel.

Hmm! OIL it is then? How Argentina can lay claim to islands that were never hers is baffling. I suppose we could claim Europe in that case? Probably would, but it has got no oil, it is in debt and has a wonky currency. How about claiming US back?

I am convinced that the Ornage monitors are all fdoreigners and it is proven beyond all doubt that they have little grasp of English as some of the words they deem offensive are not. The word f-u-n-d, for example, is barred.

I didn't think we had enough military now to defend anyone else let alone ourselves thanks to this moronic coalition.

Sadly, you areright. The Falklands have jet fighters to defend them, we are told, but no one actually tells the whole truth, which is that there are just four and they could be overwhelmed even by inferior aircraft. You are right - this coalition is a disaster and I write that as a very disappointed Tory.

I disagree. We still have one of the best military in the world. Even with cuts we will still have one of the best. Do not forget we have some very high tec military hardware.

I wonder if Sarkozy is still going to share an aircraft carrier with so we can get planes down there as well?

I've just read that an Indian minister says that the amount of aid we give to India is 'a peanut' - not 'peanuts' but 'a peanut'. It is ironic that this minister says that India also gives out foreign aid so the reported asked if we could have our 'peanut' back! Also, Cameloon said he would speak to the Indian government after they ordered new planes from France. As yet he hasn't even bothered to pick up the phone to talk to anyone in India. Nothing to do with the Falklands - I just thought I would mention it.

How on earth would the Argentinians have information that there are nuclear weapons? No government ever confirms or denies the deployment of nuclear weapons, and in any case we wouldn't use nuclear weapons against a non-nuclear power. As for the Vanguard-class submarine, that would be using a sledgehammer to crack a nut - more likely to be an Astute class or one of the T-class. What a hysterical bunch!

The Argentine President needs to keep her big mouth closed. She seems to have a huge amount of anti British feeling. Although this is bound to be a vote winner for her and lets not forget the oil. It is time she put up or shut up. If she wants trouble lets give her trouble because Britain still has one of the best Armies/Navy /Air force in the world.

This is just sabre rattling from Argentina, their president is just using the Falklands to increase her political popularity. The majority of the Argentinian people have no desire for another war - and the president knows it. Plus im quite sure the British government are quite happy for the media to continue the Falkland narrative, keeps people from thinking how their politicians are scamming the country
