Five Royal Marines Charged With Murder

Five Royal Marines have been charged with murder over the death of an insurgent in Afghanistan last year.

Seven marines were arrested on Thursday, and the Royal Military Police (RMP) detained two more marines on suspicion of murder, one on Friday and the other on Saturday.

It took the total number of arrests to nine. Four have since been released without charge, pending further inquiries.

A Ministry of Defence spokesman said: "The RMP has referred the cases of the remaining five Royal Marines to the independent Service Prosecuting Authority (SPA).

"Following direction from the SPA these marines have now been charged with murder and they remain in custody pending court proceedings.

"It would be inappropriate to comment further on this ongoing investigation."

The incident, which did not involve civilians, happened while the Marines were based in Helmand.

The arrests are thought to be the first time UK servicemen have been held on suspicion of such charges during the conflict in Afghanistan.

LET THEM OUT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY. We all know there are rules of engagement, but it's not so black and white in the line of fire. Have a go for yourself Mr. MOD white collar man. Good luck boys

Two ways the MOD gets rid of personnel. One send them to places they should not be,they get killed by bomb or bullet! Two charge them with murdering the enemy ,they then don't have to pay a pension to these brave soldiers.Another story on orange today shows what these sir fart-ares top brass necks are!!!!!!

There was quite a bit of outrage in WW2 when the SS murdered captured British troops.

This just goes to show that now the inmates are definitely running the asylum. We train these soldiers at great expense, send them to every war zone to fight terrorists, and then tie both hands behind their backs. We then add in political correctness and human rights, ( but only for the terrorists ) Then we expect our lads to sit there watching friends get shot and killed and not react, come on seriously, get your act together, bring the lads home. Let these people sort themselves out, if they want to kill each other as they have for hundreds of years let them. If you want to send people in to fight these terrorists let the politicians do it, and see how quickly we leave then. We have seen a rise in the number of terrorists from abroad seeking and getting asylum in this country, we pay them to stay, and then cannot get rid of them because they may be killed back at home, and have human rights, funny how human rights do not exist in the Muslim world.!!! Let our troops do their job without fear or retribution or bring them home now.

There is strong evidence that this was death by torture. They would not be under military arrest unless so. I am appalled by many comments that condone this action. We engaged to relieve this form of oppression and this shows our intolerance of it. Pity some posters are not more educated.

Mr Shakes these 5 have been CHARGED not arrested it was stated in an article yesterday that this is a case of how an injured man was dealt with after fighting has ceased and that there is evidence taken from a laptop. While I agree that these soldiers have been put in a terrible position and i myself if i had been fired on or my friends injured would not be able to show any self control what is being reported to have happened in this case is wrong and if found guilty the people must be punished. Im do think that thr MOD should deal with this behind closed doors though until there is a verdict as the only reason i see to leak this news is political gain and to be seen to be doing the right thing these soldiers risk their lives for their country and deserve protection and support in return until found guilty or hopefully innocent

This is still a war on terror I presume and we have just played straight into the enemy's hands. This ranks highly on the crass-o-meter, it is an outrage. Let's all sit on our hands and wait to walked upon, is this what our brave lads and lasses fought for in WW1 & WW2 so we could have freedom but choose to throw it away and our children can be ruled by fear dictatorships. Arrrgh .. so angry. God save the Queen, but please line up the bureaucrats, H&S,PC & equality campaigners!

Mr Shakes i was just saying it had moved on from them being arrested to being charged im not having a go. I dont mean it should be done in secret i just feel that soldiers deserve to be protected until the process is finished if and hopefully they will be found innocent they should get an apology if found guilty all the details should be made public. I see no advantage to this drip feeding of info all it does is create doubt and bad feeling towards the armed forces and they do not deserve that for or against the was these men and women are out there risking there lives and deserve the 109% backing and protection of the government and MOD unless proven guilty even then they are entitled to support. This drip feeding of info only gives the crazies things to shout about.
