Florida Day Care Crash Suspect Surrenders
A man being sought by police after a car crashed into a Florida day care centre has been arrested.
The Orange County Sheriff's Office says 26-year-old Robert Alex Corchado surrendered at the county jail.
A four-year-old girl was killed in the incident at the KinderCare centre. Eleven children and three adults were also injured.
The Florida Highway Patrol says Corchado crashed into a convertible, which then smashed into the day care centre.
The Orlando Sentinel reported a witness as saying the car disappeared inside the day care centre before the driver emerged, apparently unhurt but visibly shaken.
Small children and infants in cots were evacuated outside into the playground after the crash, while several of those injured were taken out on stretchers.
Parents could be seen waiting to pick up their children and then clutching them in their arms as they were taken to their vehicles.
Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs called the crash an "absolute tragedy and disaster".
Records show Corchado has been arrested eight times since 2000, including in December when he was charged with leaving the scene of another crash.
The day care centre's website says the centre provides childcare and learning opportunities for children aged six weeks to 12 years old.
