Freddie Starr dismisses groping claims

Veteran comedian Freddie Starr has denied allegations he attempted to grope an underage girl in the 1970s.

The funnyman has dismissed Karin Ward's allegation that he tried to touch her breasts when she was 14, while visiting late entertainer Sir Jimmy Savile at the BBC Television Centre in London.

Ward's claims come amid growing uproar over accusations Savile, who died last year, sexually abused children during his heyday.

Starr says, "I have never been in any situation with Jimmy Savile... and I have certainly never been with this woman. I think these women are very brave to come forward, but they shouldn't drag my name through the mud.

"I completely understand their predicaments, but when they are doing it for a reason, and trying to pick names out of a hat, saying 'he'll do, Freddie Starr will do' - they could have picked anyone. It could have been some other poor b**tard.

"It's horrible to be faced with this. They've done this, going after a book deal regardless of the consequences. I think there are more to come forward - and I think there should be a police investigation into it now.

"I've never touched any underaged girl in my life. Paedophiles are a pet hate of mine, so I refute (the allegations) completely."

Savile was the focus of a controversial expose titled Exposure: The Other Side Of Jimmy Savile, which aired on ITV on Wednesday and now BBC bosses have vowed to help police with any investigation into the claims.

In a statement to staff at the BBC, the network's Director General George Entwistle writes, "Like everyone who works here, I was appalled by the things I saw in the ITV documentary. I am determined that the corporation will do absolutely everything it can to help find out what happened.

"I have personally been in touch with the police at a senior level to discuss how we should proceed and I have agreed that we should work closely with them. I'm certain this is the right thing to do.

"This is a deeply upsetting issue which I know has horrified people across the BBC, and our thoughts and sympathies are and must be with the women affected. I am absolutely determined that we will leave no stone unturned in our efforts to support the police."

Am trying to think who I can accuse of groping me so I can get fame for 15 minutes. I make this allegation 32 years old so the lady must have taken her time to think about reporting it. A bit like the JS story !!

Blue side. I find it rather strange that those who have attacked JS with such venom & vigor previously have nothing to say about this alleged abuser. Perhaps it is because he can defend himself and sling a few writs around

In my opinion this could just be one more of many. If anyone has the courage to come forward and fight the mighty establishments than I say never too late or too soon. It must be very daunting and freighting to approach Governments and major institutions especially as recently reported many of these select bodies are corrupted themselves. Only a few hundred years ago an individual trying to speak out would have been called a witch by the Church told they would go to hell and burn at the stake. It goes on today but very subtly and quickly shoved under the carpet. We are still told to watch out or we will go to hell! As for the paedophile condition, this has gone untreated for years and I truly believe by understanding it and finding a logical way to prevent this from continuing we may be able to put a stop to this madness. Paedophiles can be extremely cleaver at covering things up and use lots of diversion tactics. Some of the most intellectual aspergic minds of the 20th Century were excellent manipulators??

I just wanted to say, the accusations in this article do sometimes happen by accident. Also, Freddie Starr is a comedian. They tend to be a bit strange in their behaviour due to the nature of their work. He could well have just been making jokes to all sorts of people, including girls and perhaps some of them misunderstood his sense of humour or thought he was being serious? Perhaps, nothing whatsoever even happened, as is OFTEN the case, in the news, these days.

Not surprised in the slightest that more of these allegations have surfaced. If as suggested by many in the TV industry that this sort of behaviour was and still is rife then expect a whole load more. The list will read like a page from who's who
