Temperatures Set To Sink Again Across UK
Temperatures have plunged again after struggling to rise above freezing across much of the UK after Britain endured its coldest night of the winter.
Southern Britain will have another severe frost, and some fog patches, but cloud spreading from the North will lift temperatures.
On Friday night the mercury plummeted to just under -18C (-0.4F), according to forecasters, as families setting off on half-term getaways were warned of "deceptively dangerous" road conditions.
Chesham, in Buckinghamshire, felt the brunt of the chill overnight on Friday, where the mercury reached a low of -17.8C - the coldest temperature recorded since December 2010.
Temperatures sank to a bracing -16C in Lincolnshire and -14C at Stansted, in Essex.
People heading off on half-term getaways are urged to be careful of "deceptively dangerous" road conditions, as sub-zero temperatures lead to hardened snow on the ground.
Forecasters have predicted hard frosts and black ice just days after the Met Office issued a "yellow" weather warning for ice and snow.
The AA has also cautioned Britons driving to bitterly cold mainland Europe for ski breaks, where they face the risk of "frozen" diesel fuel in vehicles.
London, south-eastern areas and the Midlands will struggle to get above freezing on Saturday - but the bitterly cold weather has not deterred a number of hardy swimmers from taking a dip in the partially ice-covered waters at the Serpentine, in London's Hyde Park.
Saturday night is set to be another cold one in England with temperatures in London and the Midlands falling to around -6C, and milder temperatures likely on Sunday.
The AA's president, Edmund King, said: "There are still treacherous conditions on many local roads around the country.
"We found that even on local roads that had been gritted, the rain washed off the grit and turned to sheet ice."
Heathrow Airport has said there is no expected disruption to flights over the weekend as skiers head to the slopes.
But there has been disruption on the sporting front, with freezing weather leading to the cancellation of a number of this weekend's sporting fixtures - including Crystal Palace's postponed Championship clash with Doncaster and a number of games in League One and League Two axed.
Race meetings at Newbury, Uttoxeter and Warwick have also fallen victim to the cold snap.
Officials at the British Horseracing Authority reached a deal to ensure that the major races from the abandoned card at Newbury will be rescheduled for February 17.

planet earth has been in and out of ice ages since the planet was formed, unfortunately the world leaders think if they tax us enough it'll stop, well here's a bit of breaking new, tax us as much as you like it won't stop global warming.

I find it amazing to look at global temperatures and find in Arabia it's 40C then not so very far north in Siberia it's -40C then northern China is freezing at -20 or whatever then southern China is +20C or whatever it was. I was just reading 'bout internal Lunar temperatures being 800C in the centre up to 130C or so towards the surface. You think maybe Alien astronauts use leather space suits like Gagarin's gloves? Space is full of sewing machines for stitching leather? Then, what 'bout ... cows jumping over the Moon? ... Strange, huh? Strange.

Steve Pickering

Good ,maybe it will keep the idiots of the streets eh ?

remember last winter a long cold one. well this winter may be shorter but colder .just hope we get better weather soon. Please think of your neighbours who are old or disabled make sure that they have heating and a warm meal.this could become the norm ? Years ago it snowed a bit it stayed around for weeks my local river used to flood 2-3 time in winter but now also floods in summer.pensions going down heating costs going up. Where i live not so long ago a family froze to death in a flat. in this day and age its not right something needs to be done . This global warming who benefits from that.

Gordon Berry
I can't go along with all the things that are said about global warming. I spend quite a lot of time, about 5 months a year in the eastern USA and they would enjoy some global warming. there is possibly a climate change happening but I can't belierve its due to man's activity. I flew over Mt. St. Helens in 1980 when it errupted and the pilot gave out some staggering figures of polution. The volcano that went off in Indonesia evidently produced more pollution than man's activity had produced since the dawn of time, according to scientists in 12 months.

Mike Drouin
wow -17.8 since 2010 thats what i call historic ,and in the winter grow up SKY you prats.

Mike Drouin
hey SKYyou wasters very old news totaly non applicable.

Bring it! I want a snow day! And who still calls it "global warning"? That's long since been branded a myth. Climate change!
