Fugitive Found Nearly 40 Years After Escape
A fugitive who escaped from a South Carolina jail nearly 40 years ago has been captured in western Michigan.
Dallas Smallwood, 58, was arrested on Monday in Zeeland, about 25 miles southwest of Grand Rapids.
Smallwood escaped from the jail in Anderson County in 1977.
He was serving a five-year sentence for grand larceny and receiving stolen goods.
The US Marshals Service said Smallwood was using the alias Waylon Wilson, and refused to reveal his true identity until he was being fingerprinted by authorities in Michigan.
Smallwood had been working as a truck driver and living in western Michigan for nearly a decade, the agency said.
Deputy US Marshal Steve Hetherington said: "We believe he had a girlfriend who didn't have any idea about his past."
The US Marshals Service did not say what led authorities to Smallwood.
He is being held at Ottawa County jail awaiting extradition to South Carolina.
