Fugitive Nanny Emeline Essertel Blames Drugs
A French au pair on the run from British police has apologised for her actions and said her "mistakes" were caused by drug addiction.
Emeline Essertel is wanted by detectives in South Wales after failing to appear in court in March to face charges of fraud, stealing a debit card and possessing CS gas.
The French national has now reportedly said "all the mistakes" were due to addiction.
"My best reason to leave England is because I need to go (to) rehab," she is said to have told a reporter for Wales Online via Facebook.
"All the mistakes that I made in this country (were) to stole (sic) to buy some drugs. Actually I'm in rehab to start a new life.
"I apologise (to) your country and the family for all I do and would like to say a biggest sorry."
Despite being wanted in the UK, Essertel has continued to update her Facebook profile and look for nannying work.
It is thought she has returned to France, but the 24-year-old also appears to have been travelling around Europe since she skipped bail five months ago.
Posts on the site have included pictures of a rugby final in Dublin, a break in Amsterdam and a night out with friends.
However, the images now seem to have disappeared from the site.
Essertel originally appeared at Cardiff Magistrates' Court on January 31 charged with theft, fraud by false representation and possession of a weapon.
The fraud charge accused her of using the stolen debit card to buy phone credit, while the third related to possession of a CS gas canister in Cardiff Bay on January 29.
She was released on bail until March 20 but failed to show up to court.
An advert posted on a recruitment website, which Essertel last logged into on April 16, said she had returned to France "to complete my nursing degree".
It added: "I would (like to) go back to see other countries to learn new cultures and be able to speak English (as soon as) possible.
"I want to assure you (of) my experience with children. During my studies I was able to do internships in various hospitals, primary schools and retirement homes."
Police sources said officers were aware of the possibility that Essertel may have skipped the country "quite a while ago".
South Wales Police said it was pursuing all lines of inquiry "in south Wales, London and France".
A spokesman added: "Essertel had been working as an au pair in Llantwit Major.
"We are appealing for information as to her whereabouts and ask anyone who can assist us with our inquiries to get in touch."
Essertel is described as 5ft 6in. She has short, straight brown hair and brown eyes.
