Gang-Raped Indian Teenager Kills Herself

A 17-year-old Indian girl who was gang-raped killed herself after police pressured her to drop the case and marry one of her attackers, police and a relative said on Thursday.

It comes as the 23-year-old Indian medical student who was gang-raped on a bus in New Delhi arrived at Singapore's Mount Elizabeth Hospital for further treatment.

A hospital spokesperson said the patient is in an "extremely critical condition" after the attack on December 16.

She was transferred overseas for better treatment.

The latest case, in the Patiala region in the Punjab, has again shone the spotlight on the police's handling of sex crimes.

One police officer has been sacked and another suspended over their conduct after the assault during the festival of Diwali on November 13, according to officials.

The teenager was found dead on Wednesday night after swallowing poison.

Her death came as it emerged that the names, addresses and photographs of convicted rapists will be posted online by police in India to publicly shame them for their crimes.

Inspector General Paramjit Singh Gill said that the teenager had been "running from pillar to post to get her case registered" but officers failed to open a formal inquiry.

"One of the officers tried to convince her to withdraw the case," Gill, the police chief for the area, told AFP.

Before her death, there had been no arrests over her case although three people were detained on Thursday. Two of them were her alleged male attackers and the third was a suspected woman accomplice.

The victim's sister told Indian television that the teenager had been urged to either accept cash or marry one of her attackers.

"The police started pressuring her to either reach a financial settlement with her attackers or marry one of them," her sister told the NDTV network.

Meanwhile, the Press Trust of India reported that a police officer has been suspended for allegedly refusing to register a rape complaint in the northern state of Chhattisgar.

The woman and her husband later brought the case to the attention of a more senior officer and a hunt has now been launched for her attacker, an auto rickshaw driver.

Official figures show that 228,650 of the total 256,329 violent crimes recorded last year in India were against women.

The real figure is thought to be much higher as so many women are reluctant to report attacks to the police.

During an address to the chief ministers of India's states on Thursday, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh pledged to bring in new laws to cover attacks on women.

Shirley, Rochdale involved Pakisani's Louisa, Unfortunately Rape happens the world over. I cannot recall any news reports of gang rapes happening with the same regularity being perpetrated by "White British nationals" as is happening in India by Indians on Indians. So where does the Racist issue come into it?

No this mentality does not travel - it is already here. Figures for reported rapes (2011) show an increase from the previous year. 15,940 women reported rape to the police. Most of these offences were committed by Caucasian males. There were also circa 350 thousand reported incidents of domestic abuse - where the victims were overwhelmingly female and the perpetrator overwhelmingly Caucasian males .

Michael - just because YOU cannot recall any news items of gang rape involving 'White British Nationals' it does not mean they do not occur. The majority of paedophile offences, child abuse offences and rapes are perpetrated by white males. But don't let this fact disturb your xenophobia.

So there are two instances of gang rape reported on this website (from a population of 1 billion) and a reported incident rate of 256,329 violent crimes on women - of which two have been reported as gang rapes. So, what exactly is your point? That this is an epedemic?

Michael I did say in my post that rape is a universal crime. so i did acknowledge that rape happens all over the world. To answer your point about racism, every time a crime occurs in an asian country, the same people plough in with all the anti asian comments. It happens every time. And gang rape does happen in this country too. I appreciate that in certain cultures the role of women is narrow and they are atrociously treated. Our culture was once exactly the same and different cultures evolve at different rates

Michael - you are a bigot who looks for any opportunity to attack Pakistanis, Pakistan and Muslims. In this case you make the comment that you 'cannot recall any news reports of gang rapes happening with the same regularity being perpetrated by "White British nationals" as is happening in India by Indians on Indians' which in itself is a meaningless comment as I have already explained, but your implication is that Indians gang rape because they are Indians. That is a racist comment.

Britain: cultural intolerence; religious intolerence; shops full of sweatshop made clothes; riots; many nuclear weapons; thousands of millionaires and thousands surviving on a pittance; rapes; assaults; murders; bad food and malnourished children. We could trade lists all day. You could give me a list of good things about Britain and I counter it with a list of good things about India. What's the point? lots of very patronising comments here. rape is nothing new. this goes to show that the indian population have had enough with the lack of action by the authorities against serious sexual assaults. would a woman be 'persuaded' to marry her rapist here in GB, i think not.. perhaps india's police need more training on how to deal with the issue appropriately
