Govt Plans To See Dogs Fitted With Microchips
Millions of dog owners will have to pay for their pets to be fitted with a microchip, under plans set to be announced next week.
Ministers are expected to say that every newborn puppy should be fitted with a device giving details of who they belong to.
The information will reportedly be stored on a central database which can be accessed by police and the RSPCA.
The government believes the proposals will make it easier to trace and prosecute owners of violent dogs.
But there are concerns that such individuals will not obey the law, while responsible people will be hit with extra costs.
Charities have broadly welcomed the rules, suggesting they could also help reunite lost dogs with owners.
But Neil Parish MP, chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Animal Welfare, told the Daily Mail: "If we're not careful we're going to make things more difficult for legitimate dog owners, and not solve the real problem of dangerous dogs.
"We have got to find the dogs who are being bred illegally by people who mix breeds to create potentially vicious dogs.
"It's not so much the dogs that should be targeted, but the owners who train them to be vicious that must be targeted."
Welsh Environment Minister John Griffiths said last December that he was considering introducing legislation requiring all dogs in Wales to be microchipped.
A consultation is due to be launched later this year.
Mr Griffiths said: "Licensed dog breeders in Wales are already required to microchip all animals on their premises prior to them being moved or sold on.
"However, we are now considering plans that would require all dogs in Wales to be microchipped. This would promote responsible pet ownership, ensure pet owner accountability and help to improve the welfare of dogs across Wales."

........."will make it easier to trace and prosecute owners of violent dogs. But there are concerns that such individuals will not obey the law" ......... well blow me down with a feather , I never ever would have seen that flaw in the proposals !

TheKarmacanic
A thoroughly good idea!

Paul Walsh
Karmacanic, sarcasm doesnt become you!!!

So as usual all the law abiding citizens pay up to get their dogs chipped and the scumbag ignore it and get legal aid and appeal if court. Remember at school when everyone got punished for the idiot/bully in the class Didn't work then - qnd won't work now Cameron , Clegg & Millibland all bed wetting liberal at hearts If they can't throw one terrorist out how can you deal with millions of dogs - The politicians are more barking mad and dangerous than the dogs!

peter
Couldn't agree more - its the same with car insurance, the yobs buy old bangers dont tax or insure them and then if they're unlucky enough to get stopped their old banger is confiscated whilst we all pay more insurance. It'll be exactly the same with dogs.

Paul Walsh
Peter, on the car tax thing (off beam a bit I know) why dont they scrap car tax, put it on the fuel duty and then have an insurance disc in the car! Use your car pay for fuel, contribute to road tax. More you drive more you pay! No insurance disc, car stopped, seized, driver knicked and fined! Car destroyed if not paid! Seemples.

CHIPPING DOGS AND OTHER ANIMALS COULD HELP IN CERTAIN SITUATIONS BUT HOW CAN THEY EXPECT ITS GOING TO STOP DANGEROUS DOGS AND IRRESPONSIBLE OWNERS.A DOG LICENSE AND SIGNED PROOF ON IT FROM SOMEONE ELSE TO SAY YOU OWN THE ANIMAL MAY HELP IF THE ANIMAL GETS LOST BUT IT ALL COSTS MONEY.MORE LIKELY ANOTHER ANOTHER TAX ON ANIMAL OWNERS THATS ALL THERE INTERESTED IN MONEY NOT ANIMAL WELFARE AND CONTROLLING DANGEROUS DOGS

Romek Sowinski
Another waste of money scheme, they should microchip some of those politicians so we can put them on a central data base(BUNCH OF IDIOTS)Waste of TAX payers money.!

stewgwyn
Yes Stuart, the thin end of the wedge....

Elaine Moore
Totally agree but it should be free

gengisken1227
Why free to the dog owner? Just means every tax payer pays, even if they don't have a dog You don't pay road tax without owning a car !

Kelly James
I'd like to see the money raised from microchipping dogs donated to animal charities to care for the ones abandoned/mistreated by their owners.

John Stedman
What money raised? The cost of having a dog chipped is paid to the vet who inserts the chip, just like any other vet's bill that owning a dog will produce. By the time you've piad for neutering and vaccinations, you will have parted with a couple of hundred pounds at least. The chip is a relatively small part of the cost.

Kelly James
What if the RSPCA took responsibility for microchipping dogs? As for the cost, £30-£35 is a tiny amount compared to what it costs to own a dog for it's lifetime.

gengisken1227
Good idea, but how will it be policed- we cannot even keep our borders secure

Gordon Wright
I'd rather see paedophiles & villains fitted with tracker devices..............they do more damage

Both of my dogs were chipped when we got them, but not because they are dangerous (although I do know that anything with teeth can bite). I can understand why people are upset about the useless owners that don't clean up after their dogs, but we do clean up after our dogs and don't walk them where children are playing.

Paul Walsh
Tina you are obviously a responsible dog owner! Unfortunately the owners of the dangerous dogs are not responsible and will take no notice of this law. This is going to take between 10 & 15 years to be effective, the life time of the dogs born before the law was imposed.

neil
just another money spinning stealth tax that doesnt address the real problem, being a responsible dog owner my dog has a tag on her collar with my name, number and address on, why should i be forced to pay £35 to have the same information on a chip put inside her too, it wouldnt do anything to stop her if she ever turned nasty

stewgwyn
Why do they persist in wasting a fortune on lunatic schemes that are impossible to enforce?

Thomas Jenkinson
This govt have got to go I disagree with their social views. Debranding cigs, chips in dogs. Stitching pensioners up. Supporting the wealthy what next tattoos for ethnic minorities!

Richard Maitland
If this also applies to lap dogs, is camoron going to have cleggy chipped?

john
Oh dear, idiot gobsmiths who require zero qualifications to become MPs, talking absolute rowlocks again. The people who keep attack dogs are the criminals, they don't abide by your laws, God give me strength, one day we might get someone sensible running the country.
