Hedge Trimmer Cuts Bus 'Like Tin Opener'
Four school children have been hurt after an industrial hedge trimmer cut open a double-decker bus "like a tin opener".
At least 45 pupils were left "shocked and confused" after being showered with broken glass when the bus collided with the tractor-type vehicle, which had been trimming branches.
Paramedics were called to the scene of the freak accident in Wivenhoe, Essex, just before 8.30am.
Trevor Redburn, assistant general manager for the East of England Ambulance Service, told Sky News: "I think they've had a very lucky escape in some respects and were very fortunate it wasn't worse.
"We arrived within five minutes and it was quite a scary-looking scene. The top of the bus had been cut open. It's very similar to the way you'd use a tin opener to open a tin.
"We counted 45 children who were all shocked and confused."
He said the four who were hurt had suffered minor head injuries, mainly from flying debris from the shattered windows.
A replacement bus service was organised and parents arrived to take the injured children to hospital.
Mr Redburn added: "I want to commend our team for the work they did in quickly identifying the injuries and providing everyone with a full assessment."
