HMV Staff Use Twitter To Reveal Redundancies
HMV staff have used the company's Twitter account to reveal workers at the head office and other non-shop employees are being fired.
The staff used the social media service to inform followers that 190 people were being made redundant.
One staff member tweeted: "We're tweeting live from HR where we're all being fired! Exciting!"
The worker, who was apparently using an iPhone, added: "There are over 60 of us being fired at once! Mass execution, of loyal employees who love the brand.
"Sorry we've been quiet for so long. Under contract, we've been unable to say a word, or - more importantly - tell the truth."
The joint administrators from Deloitte later confirmed the 190 redundancies, most at HMV's office in Eastcastle Street, London, with others in its Marlow head office, a site in Solihull and distribution centres in Canning Town, London, and Birmingham.
Administrator Nick Edwards said: "Since our appointment as administrators over two weeks ago, we have been assessing the financial position of HMV.
"Following this review, a number of redundancies at the head office and distribution centres have been made.
"Although such decisions are always difficult, it is a necessary step in restructuring the business to enhance the prospects of securing its future as a going concern."
It was later reported that one of those made redundant, HMV's social media planner Poppy Rose Cleere, claimed responsibility for the tweets.
HMV called in administrators in early January after suffering dismal Christmas sales, which put more than 4,000 jobs at risk at its 223 stores.
It was one of three well-known high street firms that called in administrators in the New Year as Britain's high streets struggled against online sales.
Shortly after taking charge the administrators said the chain would no longer honour gift vouchers and cards, but after a storm of protest from consumers, they said gift cards and vouchers could be redeemed in stores from Tuesday.
Retail restructuring group Hilco UK has acquired HMV's debt, effectively giving it control of the administrator-managed entertainment chain.
The debt purchase has been taken from the books of the struggling retail chain's lenders, Royal Bank of Scotland and Lloyds.
HMV's net debt last October stood at £176m but it struggled to find a niche that would give it an advantage over online retail alternatives.
Administrator Mr Edwards added: "We have been very pleased with the level of interest in the business as a going concern, whilst the response from customers has demonstrated the demand to see HMV remain on the high street.
"Equally, the support received from suppliers has been very positive and has enabled us to continue trading during the administration.
"As a result of all of these factors, I remain hopeful we will be able to secure a future for a restructured business."
what do you think?

movvi
There'll be a lot of principled people appalled by this sort of stunt who will never set foot in these stores again - regardless of any plan to secure "its future as a going concern". Bad eggs.

Diane Rogers
What stunt

Louisa Gieldon
I agree Movvi it's not a professional way to manage a company

Diane Rogers
Again i'll ask what stunt. What have they done wrong

stewgwyn
Agreed Louisa, professional went out of the window years ago.

movvi
Hello Diane - sorry - I have to break from here to go to work! The stunt pulled by HMV administrators like Mr Edwards who think it can carry on and have a "future as a going concern" and believe people will want to buy from there regardless of dumping non-shop staff, the gift card fiasco and keeping shop staff in the dark in the days of confusion.

Diane Rogers
Movvi, that is not a stunt something has to change for the company to carry on, with every thing being done on computers they don't need so many office staff, same as people buying on line some shops may have to go what is the difference

Diane Rogers
Movvi, shop staff were not kept in dark our son was rang at home by his manager because it was his day of when it was announced

movvi
Well, that was my opinion anyway, Diane. The people at our local HMV were not informed and it was a very embarrassing few days for them! I think showing some sympathy for these shop and office workers on already very low pay was fair enough and this is what I did. I make no apologies for this! In answer to your question, I don't know what the difference is. My comment was in response to the report. I don't know about other differences you refer to, I'm afraid.

Diane Rogers
Movvi, if in youre local hmv the staff were not toldcrhat may be down to the manager,as I said my son was phoned at home.I have sympathy for anyone loosing jobs my son and his wife are having a baby in July so he doesn't want to lose his job. The difference I was on about is office staff and shop staff

movvi
Oh, I see re difference between shop staff and office staff. My original post was just about something else. I basically just meant it was a rough deal and that was all.

Diane Rogers
Movvi, thats ok I feel strongly about retail I work in a shop myself it is usually shop staff that get fired first, I do not want to see anybody lose a job but being selfish am thinking of my son

Nick Eaton
i recon once again asset stripping ??

Diane Rogers
What would you do someone has to go. Chances are they earn more than shop staff

wickhampatrick
HMV administrators have 'allowed' the public to use gift cards. Methinks that as the management knew that they were about to go under well before Christmas, it could be seen that they were selling gifts cards and therefore obtaining money by deception!

wickhampatrick
I've been made redundant four times in 24 years. In every case you had a feeling that things weren't right, assurances were given by line management and in each case about 6 or so weeks later we received our notices, some 12 months, some 3 months and one where we were all ushered out of the rented offices , that includes all management, key cards were taken from us and notices given on the public pathway, all over!

stewgwyn
I've been redundant a few times in my working life, Wick, once after they'd bought 1.5 million pounds worth of new machinery (a lot of money in 1983). There's no logic to it, but at least they had the bottle to call us into the office one by one, to say ''sorry, mate, you haven't got a job'' !

Diane Rogers
Where does it say the staff that have been made redundant were not told in the proper way

movvi
Nightmare, guys. It must have been a very worrying time.

Louisa Gieldon
A terrible way to be treated by your company.

Louisa Gieldon
I really wish that the government would tighten up employment law to make life fairer for workers. Instead they seem hell bent on removing existing rights and making it easier for employers to sack workers. It's an unfair world- i'm thinking of the decision made recently to reduce access to employment tribunals in particular.

movvi
I am growing frustrated with this site. Too many people are now coming here just to be obtuse and awkward with others, methinks. I wonder how many others also feel that some find fault with points similar to those they made THEMSELVES earlier. I do hope those who monitor this place so closely will soon start removing demanding or rude comments from posters to others which are antagonistic and critical. I resent being answerable to others for merely having an opinion! Grr. Better now!

Diane Rogers
Isn't that what debate is about

movvi
Indeed it is!

Louisa Gieldon
i see myself making the same points as more "popular" posters, yet i get voted down and they get voted up. At the new year some of the comments were frustrating me so much that i nearly stopped posting. But you know what Movvi? You are smart and logical and polite and this forum needs people like you, so don't get too frustrated. x

movvi
How kind. Thank you! I will continue to post my opinions in the way I see things and try to ignore those who just nitpick and challenge! x

Diane Rogers
Good i'm still here even though I always get marked down,it would be a boring world if we all agreed

davenlesley
Movvi. Just ignore them. There is one person on here who says he will argue black is white when he is bored. How pointless. I consider myself an opinionated old f art but at least I discuss differing views rather than sling insults or create disagreements just for fun

movvi
Cheers, Dave! I don't really come here to debate - just to vent really and I like to do so without demands from others who have time on their hands to bother!

davenlesley
Movvi. Fair enough. It does you good to unburden yourself of things that are bugging you. Your opinions are as valid as everyone elses and are never demeaning or insulting to others. You are welcome in my gang anytime.

We heard in mid december that the company was in trouble - it was on the business news on tv. We warned our family not to but gift tokens from them as they usually do at Christmas. If we knew, they knew!
Diane Rogers

The company tried to ride it out to see if Christmas could pull them back

Relying on Christmas to get you out of trouble is like putting your last tenner on a horse. Competition is ferocious, and only the fittest will survive. Is that ok for your ''terms and conditions'', Orange ?

That's you told, Nick - you can't possibly have bought a suite in the place you bought it (in person, no doubt)! Dear me. The world's gone mad!

Louisa Gieldon

Nick wasn't claiming to have bought a suite in HMV, just in a shop. His point, like Bryan's was about poor service when stores know they are closing/in deep trouble, but keep on trading.
Diane Rogers

I have apologised for misunderstanding, isn't it better to keep trading and staff stay in employment for as long as possible

Wasn't getting at you as i didn't read all the posts until i wrote that. I have misunderstood people and apologised too, so fair play to you.
