Hollywood Severed Head Suspect Arrested

A man has been arrested by detectives investigating the discovery of a severed human head near the Hollywood sign two years ago.

Gabriel Campos Martinez was arrested on Sunday for the 2012 murder of 66-year-old Hervey Coronado Medellin.

The Los Angeles Times, citing law enforcement sources, reported that the 38-year-old Martinez was the victim's former roommate and partner.

Martinez, who was arrested in San Antonio, Texas, with the help of local authorities, is being held without bail while he awaits extradition proceedings.

Two women discovered what turned out to be Mr Medellin's head while walking their dogs along a trail in Griffith Park on January 17, 2012.

More than 120 police officers, firefighters and Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies searched seven acres of the park during a two-day search.

A cadaver dog helped investigators find additional body parts, including hands and feet.

Police say they believe Mr Medellin was killed elsewhere and his remains dumped just inside the park, which is a popular hiking spot overlooking Los Angeles.

The iconic Hollywood sign was built in the 1920s to promote a housing development and originally read "Hollywoodland".

The last few letters deteriorated in the 1940s and the section that remained was restored in 1978.
