Hughes: 'Now Is Not The Time For EU Referendum'

The deputy leader of the Liberal Democrats has told Sky News now is not the time for a referendum on Britain's future in the European Union.
Simon Hughes said holding a vote on whether Britain should remain in the European Union would be a "complete distraction" from the issues facing the country.
"Now is absolutely not the time to have a referendum," he told the Murnaghan show.
He acknowledged the "mood had changed" in Britain since the last vote on the issue in 1975, but that there was good reason not to hold another now.
His comments come as Prime Minister David Cameron faces increasing pressure from his own party to hold a referendum.
He now faces a backbench rebellion on a Commons vote scheduled for Monday, with more than 70 MPs preparing to vote in favour of the issue.
Mr Hughes said: "There are two reasons not to hold a referendum now - apart from the agreement between the two coalition partners - the first is that David Cameron is trying to help the eurozone countries sort out the most difficult economic crisis that European finance has had.
"Secondly, all our constituents are focused on other issues. They want the economy to get back on track and they want jobs to be created.
"It would become a complete distraction from what is the main issue.
"International terrorism, Libya, the energy crisis around the world, a European Union which, at the moment, we do half our business with - for some Tories and some Labour people to put their head in their hands and back away from the idea that the most important issue in Britain now should be the economy and jobs and getting us back is completely wrong."
But George Eustice, Conservative MP, disagreed: "The reason the government's got a bit of a problem here with its backbenches is there is just an impression that they want to put this in the deep freeze.
"At a time when we have got a recession looming again, we have got to think outside the box and be quite radical.
"Part of that has got to be about shaking up employment laws, social laws and freeing up our economy.
"If now is not the time to try and address the shortcomings of the EU when is the time?"
The Prime Minister hinted on Sunday that the eurozone crisis could be an opportunity for Britain to start reclaiming powers from Brussels.
He promised to "exact a price" if the countries with the euro seek closer integration and a change to existing treaties to deal with the ongoing problems.
He said: "Any treaty change - as the last treaty change did - is an opportunity for Britain to advance our national interest."
But Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg said it was "far too early early to speculate on the Government's negotiating position".
what do you think?

ANY time is a good time to hold a referendum on our imprisonment in the EU. We fought wars to stay free and not to be dictated to by foreign powers. We won the wars but by God have we lost the peace, thanks to what amounts to no less than treasonable behaviour by egotistical politicians who flatly refuse to listen to the country they're supposed to represent. Great Britain? Do me a favour; we would have to improve 500% to become Mediocre Britain. Tyranny? Thy name is Westminister.

We could help get the economy back on track by not paying exhorbitant amounts of our money to an economic bloc of which we are not full members. The leadership of that block is not democratically elected and they make decisions that affect our national legislation regardless of whether we have signed up to it or not. If we opt out of something they then introduce it through a side door. The people aren't going to be distracted by this referendum should we get it. They will be ecstatic. His comments just go thow how out of touch with the nation the Lib Dems really are.

I think Mr hughes, that this the time to hold a referendum, why do you and yours always treat the general public as if we were all stupid? Have you got business' set up in the EU? you know well that this country is being ruined by remaining in this corrupt out of date, get everything for nothing at our cost, we have put far more into europe than we have ever got out. i expect that the people will vote to be removed from this disgusting group.

Julian Davies
This needs to be resolved now, and I know which way the people of this country will vote. Get us out of this corrupt European Union and lets stop paying billions to prop up the Europeans. They wanted the control and the Euro so let them have it. We can then trade with the free world. The Lib Dems are just hiding their heads in the sand. REFERENDUM NOW!!!!!!!

Danny Noble
Get out of EU, the best thing for GB, we do not need eu, they are corrupt, why should be pay for the eu what do we get, other than scvangers from other eu countries. EU is a house of cards build on a sea side. GET OUT OF EU.

Why do people think that Cameron has told 'his' mp's to vote against a referendum? It's because he knows full well that the people of this country would probably vote overwhelmingly to GET US OUT of something that nobody in this country voted for entry into! Europe? You can keep it!

Stuart Rogers
People of the UK there is a party to vote for that is passionate about getting us out of this corrupt club! - the party? UKIP - it will do what it says on the tin!!! - vote UKIP vote for our freedom!!!

Peter Callaghan
It is exacty the bureaucracy, red tape, quango making jobs for the boys and idiototic idea of free markets and globalisation is why there are few manufacturing jobs left in this country.EEC ideology saw to this demise. In Germany the Police drive German cars and France likewise not here.Whats wrong with the old Buy British policy.

referendem PLEASE..... we get nothing from the EU ........

Keith Millington
Bring on a Europe Referendum!!!!!!Europe is a place to go for hollidays......The English are not "European" in the political sense but our politicians sold us a pup back in the 70's when the last referendum was held on membership of a common market, not a european state .Much of the woes of this country's decline can be laid at the importation of european law into this country and the labour party's blatent importation of people from abroad by the hundreds of thousands, people who they thought would vote for labour and thereby perpetuate their power to carry on debasing our English heritage....As soon as all 3 political parties agree that we should be in europe the alarm bells should be ringing that it is time to get out!!!Bring it on

We can hold a referendum Hughes, and decide on a date to pull out if that is the result. 4 times I have been made redundant as companies have been sold abroad. This country is a democratic illusion !

triciat13
they don't dare hold a referendum because they know exactly how the people will vote. do as i did and e-mail your mp to tell him how you feel - not that it will make much difference though. the poor lambs have been told how to vote by their leaders.

out of europe now please its run by failed politicians like the kinnocks and mandelson the most sacked person in the labour cabinet i want out of this economic shambles now before its too late come on england lets shout really loud for a reforendum

45% of our trade is with the EU, we have become much more than neighbours but friends with a common goal...PEACE through trade and closer understanding of each other cultures. It has helped Ireland, Portugal and Spain immeasurably since we joined and it has made jobs in the UK safer and business listen to their employees more. Voting to leave the EU should be left our democratically elected representatives who know much more about our relationship with the EU. If nothing else, our membership with the EU maintained peace within European continent unthinkable....something nobody living in the previous 50 years could ever dream of.

John Davison
The last conflict where members tried to leave a union was when the Confederate states tried to leave the Union because federal aims were overriding the wishes of the idividual members states. This was the real cause of the American Civil War, not slavery. Slavery didn't become an issue until the Union needed more troops because it was losing the war. I suspect that the last comment on this thread is a federalist at heart. Peronally I would rather ebcome the fifty first state of the Unites States than remain in Europe. At least there the states do actually have a say in how their states are run and can repeal any federal statute which we currently cannot.

Philip Alderson
Seems Mr. hughes has a convemiently short memory. Wasn't he elected on the basis that there would be an in/out referendum on the EU? Perhaps he should resign and stand for re-election on this new platform?
