MoD Denies Injured Troops' Jobs 'At Risk'

The Ministry of Defence has denied reports that wounded service personnel were at risk of redundancy under defence cuts.
According to a leaked memo seen by The Daily Telegraph, troops wounded in Afghanistan or Iraq could be among thousands of soldiers facing the axe.
Injured personnel were exempt from the first round of job losses earlier this year, but the memo suggests as many as 2,500 wounded soldiers, 350 of whom have lost a limb, could be made redundant as 16,500 personnel are axed by April 2015.
However, a spokesman for the MoD said in a statement: "The information in the leaked Army memo from a junior officer is incorrect.
"Beyond those already announced, there are no further Army reductions planned.
"There is absolutely no plan to change our treatment of service personnel who are wounded, injured or sick.
"Personnel injured on operations will not be included in the redundancy process while they are undergoing medical treatment.
"No one will leave the Armed Forces until they have reached a point in their recovery that is right for them."
The memo became public as the Government said it was planning to issue guidelines that former Armed Forces personnel should be moved to the top of waiting lists for social housing and assistance for first-time buyers.
About 2,000 soldiers have already lost their jobs due to spending cuts, but the MoD denied that any final decision had been taken on the scale of the next tranche of redundancies.
The leaked memo, which was reportedly sent to senior commanders in Afghanistan by a junior officer, was said to indicate 12,000 troops would be told in January that their jobs were at risk, with 2,300 of those to be made redundant.
Among those vulnerable to compulsory redundancy were members of the "rear operations group" of fully-trained personnel on standby to fill in for dead or wounded, it suggested.
Subsequent waves could add as many as 13,000 redundancies by April 2015.
"The total number of personnel selected for redundancy in T1-4 will be approximately 15.5k - 16.5k. All redundancy tranches are scheduled to be complete by Apr 15," The Daily Telegraph quoted the memo as saying.
Despite the MoD's emphatic denial of the information in the memo, shadow defence secretary Jim Murphy said: "These are really worrying revelations.
"No one should be sacked because they are seriously injured while defending our country.
"The Government should be doing everything in its power to support people into new roles in the Forces, in the MoD or to a new career outside of defence.
"After all the changes to defence in the past year this would be the cruellest cut of all."
Last year's Strategic Defence and Security Review had revealed the Army wouldbe reduced by 7,000 soldiers by 2015, while the RAF would lose about 5,000 personnel.
what do you think?

Cameron would be wise to look into this as sure a God made little green apples it will bite him hard should it be allowed to happen

All the gobsmiths parading with their poppies paying their respects to the dead and injured. Then there is their true face, it's the dole queue for you Tommy Atkins, we don't need you anymore. Never has there been a more thoroughly nasty and self serving bunch of politicians than we have now.

I bet your bottom dollar there is truth in it...the lines quoted Personnel injured on operations will not be included in the redundancy process while they are undergoing medical treatment. "No one will leave the Armed Forces until they have reached a point in their recovery that is right for them." read between those lines it says while they bein treated, but what about after, and whats riht for them, this overnment will rip the heart out of our military and try to place injured personel in demeaning jobs and then try to encourage them to leave, once they then left they are no longer their concern and are so abandoned, I have seen it and believe me its true

Paul Martin
i might believe you, if i could understand the gibberish you have posted. (bein , riht, overnment), and not just the spelling, but the whole passage doesn't make much sense. Oh, and by the way,the whole story is just a rumour.

I am a proud ENGLISHMAN but before 1 hurt service person gets the bums rush the whole of the mod should be dumped in helmond with all the crap equipment they have issued and get whats comming

Another Sign of how this country is going to the dogs. Our brave soldiers do battle for ENGLAND, and they get shafted when hurt what the hell is happening. Think we need to get rid of the dumb ass leaders and get someone in who puts the people first instead of the freakin budget. If we didnt have 2 budgets a year and 1 pay rise a year and a shed load of immigrants we might get back on our feet.

Why the big fuss thats what i want to know. In any other job if you can not do what you are getting paid to do thenyou are sacked. So if you are a pongo and can't solder any more then you should expect to be given the boot!

ABritMum
Because not many jobs demand you place your life on the line every single day with a good chance it may be taken. Because a soldier can't fight it does not mean he/she can't still serve if they want to and are capable of it.

Paul Martin
And if you can't do that job, because of an industrial accident, then you get properly compensated. You don't get sacked . Still playing the troll as usual, i see. Eh Dave.

Bob Attoe
yeah true but not every job u get shot at or blown up. we need to look after the ones that look after us

jeanne
Why are we invading other countries with trained psychopaths? Thatt's the biggest wrong of all.

Mike McDonough
There are more armchair warriors employed by the MoD than there are soldiers..This is a money saving exercise designed to save these civilian jobs at the expense of the heroes who fight to protect them..At this rate the UK will have to hire private contractors to fight our battles 'cause there will be no armed forces to do it for us.

The people making the decisions about defence cuts should be tried for treason! They are leaving our great land severely under-protected and vulnerable and if that isn't treason i struggle to think of anything else that is!
