Jackson Stars At Awards Show As Hologram
A hologram of Michael Jackson has made a spectacular appearance at the Billboard Music Awards, mirroring the late King of Pop's trademark 'moonwalking' dance moves.
The hologram performed Slave To The Rhythm, a song from Jackson's new posthumous album Xscape - based on music made by the singer but not released during his lifetime.
Dressed in a gold jacket, white T-shirt and red trousers, Jackson's digital image appeared on stage with a plethora of dancers, bright lights and pyrotechnics.
Many members of the audience said the dazzling performance was by far the biggest moment of the music awards show.
"We tried to do as best we could what we thought Michael would have loved, and those of us who knew Michael really well, we had a good perspective on it," Epic Records chief executive LA Reid said backstage. Reid worked on the album and released it.
Hologram USA Inc and Musion Das Hologram, the two companies which own the patents to the technology, had filed a lawsuit against the Billboard Music Awards, claiming that use of a Jackson hologram would be in violation of their patents.
However, a federal judge ruled on Friday that the awards show could use the singer's image for the special performance.
Jackson died in 2009 from an overdose of the surgical anaesthetic propofol.
Justin Timberlake won seven awards at the ceremony, including top artist and Billboard 200 album.
"All the other finalists, Miley, Imagine Dragons, Bruno, Katy, I love you guys, it's not a competition, but if it is, I won!" Timberlake said.
Robin Thicke, who won four awards including top Hot 100 song for Blurred Lines, debuted a new song called Get Her Back, aiming to win over his actress wife Paula Patton after they announced in February they were separating.
He sang on bended knee and ended with the line: "I gotta get her back tonight."
Miley Cyrus performed The Beatles' Lucy In The Sky with Diamonds with Wayne Coyne of the Flaming Lips remotely from the UK where she is on tour.
Jennifer Lopez won the Icon award which she received from Ricky Martin.
