Jeremy Renner's The Avengers' complaints

The Avengers star Jeremy Renner hated playing sharp-shooter Hawkeye in the Marvel Films blockbuster - because the character's zombie state left him unable to act.

The star's character was turned into an emotionless servant by ancient supervillain Loki at the beginning of the summer hit and he didn't get to really show off his acting skills until towards the end of the film.

Renner tells the Los Angeles Times, "(For) 90 per cent of the movie, I'm not the guy I signed on play. All I could really work on was the physical part of it all, because that didn't change.

"If we go to the evil part, or hypnotised or whatever the heck you want to call it, it's kind of a vacancy. Not even a bad guy, because there's not really a consciousness to him. The interesting part was being guilty about the bad things I did do when I was hypnotised.

"I was limited, you know what I mean? I was a terminator in a way. So yeah, fun stunts. But is there any sort of emotional content or thought process? No. That doesn't exist in that time... (and) it happens to be for most of the movie."
