John Lennon crowned rock's biggest ever star

The Beatles legend John Lennon has been named rock's ultimate icon by editors at music magazine NME.

The late star, who was assassinated in 1980, topped a survey of more than 160,000 readers, beating former Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher into second place.

David Bowie is third in the poll, and the top five is rounded out by Arctic Monkeys star Alex Turner and late Nirvana icon Kurt Cobain.

The shortlist was drawn up from an initial pool of 60 nominees earlier this year as editors at the publication launched a search for the biggest rock star of the last 60 years.

Others in the final top 10 of the NME Ultimate Musical Icon list include Jimi Hendrix in seventh place and Gallagher's older brother, former Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher, in ninth.

Come on NME are carrying this a bit too far there have been numerous performers and writers whose contribution to rock and popular music have been iconic. Says it all when they include Liam Gallagher. This mag has become a joke.

to place Alex turner in the top 5 really does say something about whos reading NME these days, this pole has no reference on what society as a whole likes in there artists, most of the world wont even know who this guy is, so the NME and there readers place Alex turner over Jimi hendrix, Elvis Presley, Bryan Jones,Marc bolan,Paul weller,Jim morrison,Elton John, Freddie mercury, Billy fury,Mick jagger, Keith richards,Ozzy osbourne, Jimmy page, John bonham, Keith moon,Roger daltrey, Sid vicious......the list goes on and on....and on... now if this list was top 100 most obnoxious over rated rockers then yes Alex would be in the top five no problem.
