Leonardo DiCaprio Launches Motor Racing Team

Award-winning actor and environmentalist Leonardo DiCaprio is starting a motor racing team to compete in the new all-electric Formula E series.

The Oscar-nominated star of The Aviator and Titanic is co-founding the new Venturi Grand Prix team, which is based in Monaco and will race in the inaugural season, starting next September.

DiCaprio said: "The future of our planet depends on our ability to embrace fuel-efficient, clean-energy vehicles.

"Venturi Grand Prix has shown tremendous foresight in their decision to create an environmentally friendly racing team, and I am happy to be a part of this effort."

The actor is famous for his environmental campaigning and last month donated $3m (1.8m) to the World Wildlife Fund charity.

Formula E is a new FIA Championship and will use electric single-seater race cars capable of speeds in excess of 150mph.

The series will compete on 10 city circuits in 10 different cities, starting in Beijing and ending in London the following June.

Ten teams, each with two drivers, will go head-to-head in an effort to increase interest in electric cars and spark innovation in the technology.

DiCaprio's team is the 10th and final team to be announced.

Last week, Sir Richard Branson announced his return to motor sport, with Virgin Racing entering a team.
