Les Miserables soars at nation's box office
Tom Hooper's movie musical Les Miserables has hit a high note at the top of the nation's box office chart for a second consecutive weekend after seeing off its Oscars rivals to rake in £4.4 million.
The stage show adaptation, which stars Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway, saw off competition from Django Unchained to take the number one spot this weekend.
Quentin Tarantino's Western, which will compete against Les Miserables for the coveted Best Picture trophy at the Academy Awards next month, came in second with £2.8 million.
Another Best Picture contender, Ang Lee's drama Life of Pi, earned £1.2 million to take third place, while Naomi Watts' Best Actress-nominated turn in tsunami movie The Impossible is close behind with £1.1 million.
Gangster Squad, starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, rounds out the top five with takings of £791,799.
