London Olympics: 13,500 Troops To Be Deployed

HMS Ocean, the Royal Navy's biggest ship, is to be moored in the Thames and 13,500 armed forces personnel deployed during next year's Olympic Games.

The extra measures have helped send the security costs of the games spiralling to around £1bn.

Defence Secretary Philip Hammond announced that there would be 7,500 forces personnel dedicated to venue security.

Typhoon jets will be moved to RAF Northolt to provide air cover during the seven weeks of the games.

HMS Bulwark, an amphibious assault ship, will be based in Weymouth. Both craft will carry Puma or Lynx helicopters.

They can also carry the Apache attack helicopter armed with cannon and Hellfire missiles.

Specialist dog handlers, bomb disposal experts and another 1,000 unarmed forces personnel will be asked to support up to 12,000 police and other civil authorities.

Although the Ministry of Defence (MoD) will not comment on Special Forces deployments it is also known that both the Special Air Service and the Special Boat Service will be on standby to react to any terrorist incident, and will be based in secret locations in central London.

Originally the policing and security budget for the Olympics was set at £600m with a £238m contingency fund.

The MoD said it could not give a figure for the costs of the deployment of the equivalent of a brigade to protect the Olympics.

Mr Hammond was keen to note that "support for the games will not divert the MoD from its core business".

His officials stressed that the funding for the military component of the Olympics would not be coming out of the defence ministry budget.

Last week the government announced that an extra £270m was being set aside for Olympic venue security from its total budget of £9.3bn.

This implies that around a quarter of the cost of security for the games was unplanned.

The additional troops will be provided to boost the total number of private and national security personnel to around 23,000.

The original plan had been for just 10,000 private security officers, plus the police.

Mr Hammond said: "These numbers will be in addition to the ceremonial role which the armed forces will play during the Olympics, which will showcase our armed forces to the world.

"This defence contribution is on a similar scale to that deployed at other recent Olympic Games and will contribute to ensuring a safe, secure and enjoyable 2012 Olympics."

This is why Irland stopped winning the Euro Song Contest ... it was getting too expensive. Hosting any event like this is going to cost billions ... thankfully we never got the footbal world cup! We would have been bankrupt! When all these big cheeses are chasing after these events it is not for us they do it, they do to get a knighthood or the likes, and we pick up the tab like the zombies that we are.

I suppose they will at least be MODERATLEY safe from needless murder and attack covering this pathetic waste of public money, the alternative being shot, blown up, or just maimed, in some other total waste of time and money "propping" up what we mistakenly think might be a future investment and substitute for a "British" empire.................compared to Iraq, Afganistan, the troops deployed will probably think this is a "cushty" number...............and who can blame them!! Lets just look forward to a time ALL this rubish is consigned to history and behind us, and all we need to do is pay for it...................AND the overspend!!

@ Gavin Nellis... If you bothered to look into 9/11 the us were well aware that the planes were over the city however opted not to shoot them down for the simple reason that what gets shot down has to fall someware. So by your reconing if a 9/11 event happens there going to send up armed jets to what shoot down a plain full of hundreds of passangers and then as a result of being shot down rain hundreds if tons of burning plane on london killing yet even more inosent people. The way people burp stuff out without knowing the facts is truly amazing

I meen "Typhoon jets will be moved to RAF Northolt to provide air cover during the seven weeks of the games." what ideot thought armed jets would be of any use i meen what do they acualy plan to do with them? I meen picture this ( Alone terorist starts trouble and i can just see the MOD Ideots going yey glad we brought our air cover ... send them in to carpet bomb the stadium but look out for STATR (surface to air Toilet rolls). I meen i can see troops helping to maintain peace but aircraft carriers and jets / attack helocopters are of zero use and a simple waist of money!

Wouldn't it make more sense to stop playing the little sidekick to the self appointed world's policeman the USA? Let the Ministry Of Defense do what it says on the label, defend the UK, not attack whoever the dumb Yanks consider their enemy. Our esteemed gobsmiths are making the British as hated as our masters the Yanks. If we punch someone, then we should be prepared to be punched back.
