Lord Ashdown Involved In Fatal Car Crash
Former Liberal Democrat leader Lord Ashdown has been involved in a three-vehicle crash in which another man was killed.
The peer, who was being driven by his wife Jane at the time, said he had been left "very upset" by the crash, which happened on a country road close to his Somerset home.
He said he got out of his Renault Scenic, "immediately stopped traffic coming from the other direction" and went to check on the driver of a Vauxhall Corsa.
Mark Hurford, 49, from Crewkerne, Somerset, died before the former Royal Marine could reach him.
A 29-year-old who was travelling in a Ford Transit van suffered a dislocated shoulder and back injuries in the crash on the A356.
Lord Ashdown said: "My wife felt shocked. The police and ambulance turned up and we spent the next two hours going through the procedures that you have to have."
The 72-year-old said he had contacted Mr Hurford's family to offer his condolences to them.
"I spoke to his wife over the weekend and expressed my condolences," he said.
"My wife and I are very upset for the other family."
Avon and Somerset Police appealed for witnesses to contact them on 101.
