Madeleine Lookalike Sends DNA Sample To Police

A New Zealand girl repeatedly mistaken for missing Madeleine McCann has given police a sample of her DNA which will be sent to Scotland Yard.
The girl, who has not been named, is understood to have a similar eye defect to Madeleine, prompting members of the public to believe she is the missing child.
The DNA sample is a conclusive way of proving her identity, said Detective Senior Sergeant Kallum Croudis of Dunedin Police.
"The results of this process will not be known for some time," he told New Zealand newspaper The Southland Times.
On New Year's Eve police launched a five-day investigation when a retailer became suspicious of a man and a young girl, who bore a resemblance to Madeleine.
However, they said they were "absolutely satisfied" she was not Madeleine, and it was not the first time she had been mistaken for the missing girl.
Madeleine was nearly four when she vanished from her family's Portuguese holiday apartment in Praia da Luz in 2007 as her parents dined at a nearby restaurant with friends.
Madeleine's parents, Gerry and Kate McCann, have never abandoned their high-profile campaign to find their eldest daughter, who would now be nine.
Sightings have also been reported in Sweden, Belgium and Australia.
It is not the first time a child has been DNA-tested in relation to the case of the missing British girl.
In 2011, a young girl spotted in India with a Belgian man and French woman was tested and was also found not to be Madeleine.

What if it was your daughter, would you be fed up of it being in the news then?

If it was your daughter, would you let it rest? I would look for the rest of my life until there is proof to the contrary.

Horrible thong to say

I'd like to think that if any one of my nearest and dearest - or, indeed, I - was missing that people wouldn't stop looking. I know I for one still bear Maddie in mind and hope she can be found.

That pic was actually shown last week, its a computerised version of 'what' she may look like now. Poor choice of pic Orange!

"The results of this process will not be known for some time" - DNA testing takes 2 days to 2 weeks. Surely this one can be rushed through?

Time a full criminal investigation into the McCann and party by a proper untainted police force with no ties to the masons .There are too many uninvestigated events that took place . The McCanns and friends have been protected by some one or some organization from day one .No one will convince my that they were not responsible for her death. It's a natural human trait to continue to hope this little girls still alive until a body is found . The way the media were micro managed stinks

Nigel L
Quite agree and the way Goncalo Amaral was villified stinks of a set up.

Paul Grice
Asking for an investigation and saying the media were micro managed gets my comments removed and they say there's nothing to hide

Good to see that people are still looking and may one day find Madeleine ,there is always hope.

I wonder who is the thumbs down the kid nappers.

A birth certificate is no longer a valid document to prove your identity? What's happened to this world?

Gordon Wright
Birth Certificates can be faked quite easily. You can't change your DNA.................

Baker101
Which is what I was getting at. A birth certicate should be taken as proof of who she is, but sadly those days are over.

HARLEY1974
It's good to know that the case is still ongoing and people are still looking out for that little girl.May she be found one day safe and well and reunited with her family.

movvi
A nice little reminder, I think, in stories like this one to jog the memory of those who have forgotten - and a small tug at the conscience, perhaps, of those who don't care. I still hope she'll be found.

shaun spencer
What a wonderful story it would make if she were to be found.

movvi
Wouldn't it just?! I think those who voted you down hope she won't be found. Let's hope it never happens to them, eh?

denisparsons
I hope this is her.Surely there're can't be another girl with the same mark in the same place?

JessRowley86
Why any idiot would mark you down for this comment is beyond me. I agree though surely not many girls have the little spec in the eye like she did.

movvi
Strange thumbs-down trends on this thread!

Imagine that suddenly one day the police knocked at your door and asked you to provide a dna test because your offspring happened to look like someone else that went missing in another country years ago.how do you think youd react.id be flabagasted.youd be getting out all the family snaps, certificates and grabbing your relatives and all sorts.

Eric Coster
give everyone one an ID card with all details held on a secure central server. this could include DNA, blood type etc taken at birth. Checking would be quicker and doners for blood, bone marrow etc could be found in time. Tax perks for good citizens. Stolen children, people found early.

I thought this news item was gonna say they might have found madeleine for a second or two then.surely a they can tell if this is madeleine or not without a need for a dna test.

Baby pictures would do.or relatives statements.it wouldnt be easy to bring a kid into the world and that kid to have remained hidden for so long.
