April Jones: Man Jailed For Offensive Web Posts

A man has been jailed for 12 weeks for making grossly offensive comments on his Facebook page about missing youngster April Jones.

Matthew Woods, 19, from Chorley, Lancashire, made a number of derogatory posts about April and missing Madeline McCann after getting the idea from Sickipedia - a website that "trades in sick jokes".

He also wrote comments of a sexually explicit nature about the five-year-old, who went missing last week from near her home in Machynlleth, mid Wales.

Chorley Magistrates' Court heard members of the public were so upset about his postings that they reported them to the police.

A "vigilante mob" of around 50 people later descended upon his home address in Eaves Lane and the defendant was arrested on Saturday night at a separate address for his own safety.

Martina Jay, prosecuting, said: "When interviewed by police he fully admitted he posted messages about the two missing children.

"He started this idea when he was at a friend's house when drinking, saw a joke on Sickipedia and changed it slightly.

"He said he did it in a bid to make people think his account had been hacked. He said it got out of hand and he was drunk while doing it."

He conceded to police that his Facebook account - available to a large number of people - had not been hacked and that he was responsible for all the postings made on October 3 and 4.

Unemployed Woods entered a guilty plea to sending by means of a public electronic communications network a message or other matter that is grossly offensive.

After meeting his client for the first time, defending solicitor David Edwards told the bench: "What struck me immediately is that the enormity of what he has done has finally sunk in.

"He did seem genuinely remorseful and regretful for what he had done."

The solicitor said Woods explained what had started as a joke had gone wrong.

"His future is uncertain. He does not know whether he can go back to his home address. He fully accepts he was the author of his own misfortune," Mr Edwards added.

He asked for a community service order to be considered but the bench was told that custody could be imposed for anyone who is convicted of using extreme language that causes substantial distress or fear to another.

I don't agree with vigilante mobs harassing anyone. Nineteen is still not far off childhood and most people of nineteen don't understand how strong alcohol is. I didn't understand how strong it was when I was nineteen. Everybody says or writes stupid things, sometimes. I doubt the mob of people outside his house haven't been offensive at some point in their lives. Even though the subjects of his comments are very sad stories, I think before I die, I might state that I don't care what offensive comments people write about me afterwards. I don't know exactly what he wrote online but these are my thoughts about the subject.

Unfortunately your right. Most people at nineteen are immature and most people have done something they regret either next day or later in life. But he should have known better about writing about a missing/murdered five year old. The boys a fool and being caught then punished will show him the error of his ways and will make others think before doing likewise. Being thick, immature and ignorant is no defence. I hope he learns from this and goes onto better things. First thing he should do is apologise to Aprils parents then go and get work to make something of himself.

It never ceases to amaze me how, if I so much as try to make people see a situation from a more civilised perspective, firstly, I get something like -20 votes, then I'm reading lots of bad grammar comments supporting his extremely harsh punishment. If I said, "The plight of those two girls was bad enough without everyone trying to destroy another person's life" I'd probably get -30 votes?

I suspect this individual is "full of remorse" only because he has been caught. I am sick and tired of these people spewing out their repulsive comments from what they think is the safety of a darkened bedroom. The more of them that are caught, exposed and punished, the better. Additionally, with regard to a previous comment, the age of majority in this country has been eighteen for many years now and at nineteen years old, this person was fully aware of what he was doing. Alcohol is no excuse !!!

Adrian, what total tosh. There are lads younger than this mo ron risking their lives daily in Afghanistan and Iraq. There are many others working or studying to better themselves. He's not in the least remorseful for what he's done, he's just very sorry for himself because he got caught. You may not care what people say about you when you're dead but the people who love you (there must be some) could be very hurt.

It's very sad that people think that this is an acceptable way to behave. What a nasty and foolish young man. We seem to be bringing up new generations who are steadily less empathetic and caring than those which went before. Add to that an obsession with bloody faceache, twatter and the rest and we get this stupidity/ When did it become cool to be cruel?

It is very frustrating that people are so quick to use the "hacked" line. Very foolish. I think people should step away from Fakebook and Twa*ter for a bit and, I don't know, get some fresh air or something. Walk the dog. See some people. Maybe then we can be a nation with more empathy.

I hope this is the start of something meaningful, where onnoxious youths are shown that they can no longer be vile disrespectful and offensive with impunity. The threat of prison might make some of his like think twice before doing repulsive things like trolling, anti-social behaviour etc. It's time British society changed for the better.

Surely if you post something in a public place then you have the responsibility for that posting - no matter what the source. That sounds fair to me. There's often too much talk of rights in this country, without acknowledgment that exercise of these rights carries with it the responsibility for any outcome.
