Man Dies As Car Falls Through Ice In Wisconsin

A man has been killed when his car veered into the Mississippi River ice and fell through a hole.

The man was pulled from the vehicle but died, officials said.

Sergeant Randy Rank in La Crosse, Wisconsin, said police were alerted by a caller who had noticed tracks going over a bank.

"The vehicle was still on its tyres when it landed on the ice," he said.

"You can see the tyre tracks, it had made a left turn and tried to continue driving on the ice on Swift Creek, went a short distance and fell through the ice."

The ice was not thick enough to sustain the weight of the car, which was towed out of the water after a diver attached cables to it.

The driver was believed to be the only person in the vehicle.
