Man Dies In Head-On 'Couch Surfing' Crash

A young man has died after crashing into an oncoming car while "surfing" on a sofa being towed behind a van.

Francois Halle is believed to be the first victim of a craze called "couch surfing".

The 22-year-old was riding on a sofa, which had been placed on top of a sled and tied to the back of a van in Canada.

Mr Halle was killed when the driver lost control and the sofa swung into the path of a car going in the opposite direction.

A 21-year-old man has been accused of dangerous driving, causing death, fleeing the scene of an accident and criminal negligence causing death, CBC News has reported.

The van towing the sofa was travelling along a road in Saint-Benjamin, south of Quebec City, when the accident happened.

Mr Halle died in hospital from his injuries.

His friends said he was part of a group which regularly made efforts to carry out the stunt safely and had copied videos online.

One friend said: "It's the kind of thing that when you see it, you want to try it... we definitely like doing it; we do it often; we have a good time."

what do you think?

You could include yourself in this plan. Only an idiot would make a thoughtless, tasteless remark like this.

I remember copying Evil Knievel on my bike around some army flats in Germany, missing the step and the end of the handlebar leaving a round impression on my throat. Some of the kids liked to jump off garage rooves, copying The Goodies, I think. They all did the running across dangerous roads or railway lines stupid stunts. They all played with fire and chemistry sets incorrectly. I suppose as people "grow up" a lot of them seem to turn their stunt attentions to vehicles. I very much doubt, these kind of events will ever stop. They could well get ... stupider ... sad as it is to describe it that way. I expect everyone who ever lived has done something equally stupid although not necessarily with a car and sofa.

Youthful exuberance. Kids today demand danger for fun, and they don't realise that their toys are weapons that can deliver death. It looked like fun...

Never heard of this stunt before, but years n years n years ago when I was younger we watched the Footloose film, then copied a stunt from that, where two cars drive along parallel to each other and a person stood with one foot on each car, a real daft thing to do but at the time when you are young and fearless it is just having a laugh. R.I.P. young man.

When i was younger we used to "Skate board surf" by tying a rope on the car and being towed down the Great West Road in Hounslow. When one is young the real danger does not seem so real.

hang on folks I was 61 when I rode my disabled scooter up a skate ramp flat out trying to LOOP THELOOP, when I got to the top of the loop it fell down landing me on my head and the scooter on top of me! The A&E staff at Burton on trent hospital kept peering round the curtains to look at a grey haired old man who nearly killed his self on a disabled scooter> Hee Hee Hee. I would be ridning a couch now if I got the chance.!
