Man In Pants Crawls Across Ice To Save Dog

This is the astonishing moment a man is snapped crawling across an icy river in just his underpants to rescue his dog.
The owner is pictured inching across the River Stour before tumbling into the freezing water just metres away from his pet.
Incredibly, both the owner and the dog managed to clamber out of the river unscathed, if a little cold, and then continued their walk.
Firefighters were quick to condemn the man's actions as "extremely dangerous" and warned others not to follow suit.
The scene was captured by Paul Wenborne, 52, who was walking his own dog by the river in bitterly cold temperatures on Sunday.
He said he was with two friends and watched in disbelief as the owner stripped down to his pants and began crawling across the ice.
He said: "I couldn't believe what I was seeing. You always hear about people dying doing stuff like this. It really was a foolish act of bravery."
A spokesman for Essex fire service said: "While the ice appears to be strong it can be very thin."
The ice remained across much of the country this weekend, with the mercury dipping as low as -15.6C in Holbeach, Lincolnshire.
what do you think?

Unless you own a dog, you can't appreciate just how brave this man is. Well done mate - I salute your bravery. And as for Robert - have you never made a mistake in your life? Let he who is without sin....

I probably would have done the same, not in mens'underpants though. Years ago my sister waded into the Serpentine in London when our dog got a stick lodged into the mud and would not let it go. She could not even swim. The dog was saved by a passer by in a rowing boat.

Dog or child; if it were mine adrenalin and panic takes over and you do whatever it takes to save them. It's the damned PC brigade want to get real and are the reason we have Police and PCSOs who refuse to save drowning people due to H&S issues. This man is a Hero in my eyes.

So nice to see most of the comments in favour of what the man did, unless you have a pet you cannot understand.. they are like your children (and yes, I have children), on the old comments board I said something similar and was shot down very nastily, nice to know there are are people out there who don't think animals are 2nd class and deserve to die.

I have two children and two dogs, I would gladly give my life to save that of my children's, but a dog is just that a - dog, you cannot compare the love you have for a child to that of an animal. Dogs are good swimmers, and are more likely to get out of a frozen river than a human is. I would certainly be sad if I lost a dog in this way but am not prepared to risk my life for it. Just imagine the affect on the wider family too, how would your parents, siblings, children, partner, etc, etc, etc feel if you lost your life because of Fido, i'm sure they would all be very sad for your loss of the dog but would be distraught if a loved one perished in this way.

Bless that man.... I would do the same for my dog anyday

I like to think that I would do the same, but God bid that I should need to.

Greater love has no man than he lay down his life for his friend

All dog lovers would at least try and save their dog if it was in danger. Not sure about the pants though. . . .

I love dogs but I think he was stupid! Dog's cam rate themselves as in many previous case's where owners have died and the dogs have been found safe and well! What a numpty!

Stupid and silly thing for this guy to do. I can say that because I did a very similar thing for my dog 20+ years ago. It WAS on a lead, but it fell off the breakwater at Scarborough into the sea in April. Stupid me, jumped in after the dog and although the water was only 4 ft deep but very rough and cold, I eventually managed to get out of the sea with the dog intact thanks to onlookers. Didn't bat an eyelid at the time, but looking back it was reckless and I can only say thanks to the number of people that threw a lifebelt for me and also helped us out of the sea. Never again I said.

I can see both sides - you really do need to keep your dog away from ice - I do. But I remember a recent case where a couple went into the river to rescue their dog, leaving their baby in a pushchair on the riverbank. Neither made it out & the child was orphaned - thankfully some bystanders made sure she was safe!

Another idiot risking his life to rescue his dog which HE let off its lead.If you dont want your dog to go on the frozen river then for gods sake keep it on its lead.If you choose to do otherwise then dont expect the emergency services to put their lives in danger to rescue you.
