Man Says He Crashed Bugatti To Claim Insurance
A 39-year-old man has pleaded guilty to intentionally crashing his $1m Bugatti car into a Texas swamp in an insurance scam.
Andy Lee House, from Texas, had insured the car for $2.2m.
According to local newspaper Lufkin News, in 2009 he drove the car into the Gulf Bay in eastern Texas.
He exited the car but left the motor running, which caused the engine to take in large amounts of salt water.
The car was destroyed, and he filed the insurance claim.
House told first responders that he had been reaching for his cell-phone, inadvertently driving the car into the bay.
Appearing this week before a judge, House pleaded guilty and risks up to 20 years in prison.
At the time of the fake accident, House did not know that a fellow motorist had videotape the car plunging into the water and uploaded the video on YouTube.
That clip proved crucial for investigators, who noted discrepancies between the footage and House's account.
