Claire Tiltman: Man Faces 1993 Murder Charge

A man is to be charged with the murder of 16-year-old Claire Tiltman who was stabbed more than 40 times in an alleyway.

Colin Ash-Smith is accused of killing the girl in Greenhithe, Kent, in 1993 after she took a short cut home.

Both of Claire's parents have died since her murder.

Her mother Lin died in 2008, aged 56, and her father Cliff, 62, died in September 2012.

Senior investigating officer Detective Superintendent Rob Vinson, said: "Claire Tiltman's unsolved death is one of the longest-running cases for Kent Police and has remained in the forefront of the minds of investigating officers for over two decades."

Over the years police took 1,700 statements, studied over 2,500 messages and examined 1,000 bits of physical evidence.

Mr Ash-Smith, aged 45, will appear at Maidstone Magistrates' Court on February 28 via video link.
