Manhunt For Killer Who Escaped From Prison
A man serving a life sentence for murder has escaped from a Michigan prison and may have briefly held a woman hostage, officials say.
Michael David Elliot was discovered missing last night at around 9.30pm local time from the Ionia Correctional Facility in mid-Michigan.
"It appears that he created a hole at the bottom of the two perimeter fences of the correctional facility and then crawled through those holes," according to Michigan Department of Corrections spokesman Russ Marlan.
Elliot may have abducted a woman from Ionia using a knife or box cutter, and then drove to Elkhart in Indiana, Mr Marlan said.
There, the two stopped for gas, and the woman was able to escape and call police.
Elliot left the gas station and was at large today.
Mr Marlan urged citizens to call 911 if they see anything suspicious or become aware of Elliot's whereabouts.
Elliot is serving life sentences for first-degree murder in 1993. He also has convictions for arson and armed robbery.
