Maui Shark Attack: Man In Kayak Is Killed
A man has been killed in a shark attack while he was fishing in a kayak off the Hawaiian island of Maui.
He was bitten as he fished between Maui and Molokini, a small island three miles off Maui's southwest coast, according to Maui County Ocean Safety officials.
Witnesses told Hawaii News Now that the victim, who may have been a tourist, was dangling his feet off a kayak near Little Beach when the shark reportedly bit off one, possibly both of them.
A fellow kayaker reportedly took the victim to a nearby snorkelling charter boat but the man died before the vessel reached land.
His identity has not been released and the type of shark involved is not yet known.
Officials have closed beaches in southwest Maui.
It is the island's eighth shark attack this year and comes just three days after a shark bite was reported near the southern Keawekapu Beach.
A German tourist who lost her arm in a shark attack died in August, a week after she was bitten while snorkelling.
