Michelle Heaton wants drastic surgery to quell cancer fears

Michelle Heaton is set to undergo a mastectomy and have her ovaries removed over fears about contracting cancer.

The former Liberty X star revealed over the summer she has the BRCA2 gene, meaning she is up to 80 per cent more likely to fall victim to breast cancer.

Heaton, 33, admitted she was debating undergoing a double mastectomy, as well as having her ovaries removed, as a pre-emptive move against the illness - and she has now decided to go ahead with the surgery.

She tells OK!, "I really have no other option. I'm doing it to save my life. I don't want to live waiting for cancer to strike. I'm more scared than I (have) ever been in my life. I don't want to die young."

Easy for a man to say but it does seem the developments in treating this are moving quite quickly to the point that there are trials. I know someone who went through all of this and is now terminal so like everything with C there is no certainty. Sad this young lady is driven to such drastic measures when the answer may not be far off.

Michelle, you have already met other BRCA+ carriers. Talk to more ~ don't be scared. There are plenty of us out there who have been through the surgeries who are willing to help. Karen xxxx
