Mountain Lion Wanders Into LA Shopping Area

A mountain lion was shot dead by authorities in the western outskirts of Los Angeles after it strayed near a popular shopping street.

The animal was spotted in the courtyard of an office building in Santa Monica, which is close to a large wilderness area.

But even there, lion mountains are rarely seen - and they virtually never come down into the city itself.

So police and wildlife officials were called when one of the big cats, estimated to be three years old and weighing about 75lbs (34kg), was spotted wandering in Santa Monica.

However, the animal proved to be more difficult to control than first thought and after a stand-off, the mountain lion was killed.

"A variety of means were used to try to keep the animal back inside the courtyard area," said Santa Monica police spokesman Robert Almada.

"We deployed less-lethal pepper ball, we deployed fire hoses and the animal continued to charge in (an) attempt to flee.

"Regrettably, the animal was euthanised in order to protect public safety."

Animal rights activists voiced dismay at how the situation was handled.

Madeline Bernstein, head of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals LA, said: "Basically, they agitated and frightened a cornered cat before they killed her.

"Hosing a mountain lion down and then shooting her with pepper balls only served to make her more frenzied.

"Deadly force should be used only as a last resort. The citizens and wildlife of California deserve better."

That is awful. Poor thing. I refuse to believe they didn't have tranquliser darts available before they decided to 'hose' and 'pepper ball' the poor creature

Is that the way to do it? Torture it first and then kill it? It doesn't present the knuckle draggers who carried out this action in a very good light.

Euthanised? what a stupid word. Why not just say they killed it? tranquliser darts really should have been used in this case and then release the lion back into it's own environment after checking it was ok Pity they didn't fire pepper balls and hose down the idiots who dreamed up that stupid idea.

they shot her cos she continued to charge in order to flee, well what the hell do they expect she was scared and wanted to get away. trapping her was a major catalyst in her behaviour any creature would do the same thing when in that situation. all they had to do was tranqualise her shooting her cos she was trying to get away, this is why i hate americans, they are the dumbest animals that walk the earth today, and why they are the laughing stock of the world.

Bang Bang Bang. Wooohoo i got to kill something.. look Billybob and Billybob Jr and Billybob Sr i got to kill something { Cop stands proud }. Theses animals are forced into contact with Humans, as we strive to take more and more of their natural habitats away from them. There are just too many of us, and we have stolen that space from the wildlife. A world without many places for wilderness is a world I would not want to live in. Its about time we realised, that we are just animals as well. And every animal in such a vast universe where life is finite, is unbelievably precious. They have taken millions of years to evolve just as we have. America is lucky to retain its wild places, where-as countries like the UK are poorer for not having any.

These countries, developed [USA} and developing, [Brazil etc] should place the indigineous Indians in charge of wilderness areas, as we have done nothing but destroy them for millenia. And a lot of it is in the name of Corporate Greed. How many wilderness's have been decimated through greed for natural resources, like Oil and Gas? Humans have forgotten how to live in touch with nature, and instead live a god awful consumer based existence, slaves to a corrupt monetary system, and the industrial-military complex.

Too bloody trigger happy in that country! Why didn't they just keep it enclosed until proper help arrived to take it back to a caring sanctuary? I'm not suprised animals are heading for extinction with this attitude toward them. Tragic.

why didn't they use 'tazer ' darts fired from a shotgun range 50 -70 yards might have needed 3+ because of its size but would have given time for a tranquliser dart to work

I think we all agree here, a beautiful creature was unnecessarily tortured and killed. A tranquiliser dart would have been the obvious answer. Who in their right minds thought cats and water went together? Throw it some food, cordon off the area, stay calm IDIOTS! So very angry at this

First of all, it's not a lion, it's a cougar. So it's not as if they've shot Simba. Second, what world are we living in when the responses to someone shooting a biggish cat outnumber any reports placed on here relating to famine, mass murder and political corruption that you care to mention. Get over the death of a dumb creature, and prioritize. Now.
