Gay Marriage 'To Be Banned In CofE Churches'
Gay weddings in the Churches of England and Wales will be explicitly banned under new laws on same-sex marriage, the Government has announced.
Culture Secretary Maria Miller said other religious organisations would be able to "opt in" and offer weddings to homosexual couples.
David Cameron has backed the idea of gay marriage in church but Mrs Miller said there was too much opposition.
Unveiling the Government's plans in the Commons, she promised that religious freedom would be protected via a "quadruple lock".
As well as the ban for the established churches, it will be illegal to force a religious organisation or individual to conduct a gay wedding or allow it to happen on their premises.
It will also be unlawful for organisations or ministers to let such a marriage go ahead unless their governing body has expressly opted in.
And the Equality Act will be altered so that a discrimination claim cannot be brought where there is a refusal to marry a same-sex couple.
Mrs Miller said she would now continue to consult on how best to implement the Government's plans in legislation to be introduced early in the new year.
"I am absolutely clear that no religious organisation will ever be forced to conduct marriages for same-sex couples, and I would not bring in a Bill which would allow that," she said.
She told MPs that the changes would allow equality and faith to co-exist "without threat or challenge to each other" and ensure "marriage remains a vibrant institution".
But Tory backbenchers called for the plans to be postponed until after the next election and insisted there was no public majority in favour of allowing gay couples to wed.
Conservative MP Nick Herbert, who is openly gay, was heckled when he declared he backed the Government and agreed that the proposal had "widespread support in the country".
Fellow Tory Peter Bone shouted out "no it doesn't" and his colleague Sir Roger Gale later said letters from his constituents suggested 98% were opposed.
Mrs Miller insisted that the plans struck "the right balance" between protecting religious freedom and giving same-sex couples the same chance to marry as heterosexuals.
"For some, this is contentious, a radical reform or indeed a reform too far," she said. "But the historical facts show that over the generations marriage has had a long history of evolution.
"For me, extending marriage to same-sex couples will strengthen, not weaken, this vital institution."
The Culture Secretary added: "I would never introduce a Bill which encroaches or threatens religious freedoms."
Shadow equalities minister Yvette Cooper said: "Those who argue marriage should never change are out of touch with public feeling."
As many as 130 Tory backbenchers are against the plans and could oppose Mr Cameron, who has pledged to offer a free vote on the issue.
Earlier Stewart Jackson, MP for Peterborough, told Sky News: "I believe this is a mistake. It's a very divisive issue and an unnecessary piece of legislation.
"It is fundamentally an un-Conservative policy and if (Prime Minister David Cameron) presses ahead with this it will be a disaster for the party and the country."
Gay rights campaigners welcomed the move but critics accused ministers of ignoring a petition signed by 500,000 opponents, calling it "disgraceful".
Colin Hart, campaign director of the Coalition For Marriage, claimed: "There were serious flaws with the consultation.
"Not only was it loaded in favour of ripping up the centuries-old definition of marriage, but lacked even the most basic of safeguards to check the identity of those taking part."

It is definately not " unnecessary " it takes up newspaper space. It takes peoples minds away from the EU, immigration and unemployment ( sorry, I mean joblessness ).

shaun spencer
I still say gaye marriages in church will make a mockery of the bible , the same goes for woman bishops.it shouldnt be allowed now or in the future.

Russell Clarke
What ????

Mel Heatwole
When did you last go to church Shaun?

Jonathan Goodwin-Self
So all Conservatives against this must resign from the party and become either Independants or UKIP. Or Cameron should with Osborne be removed from the front bench and be resigned and then you have a new Prime Minister and Chancellor, and then have an in/out referendum on the EU and cancel all overseas aids.

Edgar Beckett
Fortunately for you there is no law against having high hopes. Don`t do what that lady who worked at the King Edward VII hospital did, will you ?

Labour went to war Conservatives want Gaye marriages in church. This policy will be as harmful for conservatives as was labour going to war. The irony with conservatives is that I bet most of their MPs have had some sort of encounter with a man.

Is this the g@y lawyers society trying to push this through....perhaps so they can earn some cash for divorce? Seriously though who cares who gets married, in America they marry their pets.

Is it recognised by any church in the states? I do know it hit the Springer show and the audience hated it! Shows something

El Bubsio
Wlu, it shows that those opposed are the sort of people who like Jerry Springer/Jeremy Kyle et al (ie - knuckle dragging idiots of sub par intelligence), maybe?!

davenlesley
I can only see trouble ahead. This will end up a lawyers charter with legal challenges springing up all over the place. If the churches and other religious places are specifically excluded from the legislation why bother with it in the first place

Gordon Berry
You could be very easily correct. Once a church refuses a marriage people could run to the Court of Human Rights.

I find this subject totally repugnent it goes against the teachings of the church and all the ethics by Christian churches over the past 2000 years. Its not about same sex relationships its about eroding religon, well its been tried many times over the past 500 years and lead to much torture and bloodshed but now days history is not taught in schools so Camerons generation know no different. He should be reminded along with others of his ilk and would be anti-christs not to meddle wiyh peoples basic beliefs or he may end up like Salman Rushdie continually looking over his shoulder. I have mentioned before once you stamp out religon it wont be long before you stamp out people.

Who cares !!!!!!! Really couldn't care who got married to who and where not my place or any one else's to stand in there way !!!!!!! And I think the church should stop being so so sexiest as its the lady's going to church keeping them going

Spot the non-christian without a historical education. I'm sorry to burst your bubble but there isn't a 2000 yr old Christian church (physical or otherwise) anywhere. But if you feel like maybe renouncing ignorance and learning a little you will find that Christianity barely acknowledges its own laws (divorce, blasphemy, shellfish eating etc), only a small minority attend church regularly, the laws of marriage have been abolished to suit royalty when required and the whole Bible itself is nothing more than a collection of older myths legends and other religions muddled together (and remuddled periodically) that no one bothered with until made to do so by conquering armies. Education is precious - don't waste it on fantasies that don't exist.

If you are against g@y marriage then don't marry a person of the same sex, sorted.

I dont want it to be carried out in my church. Let them carry it out somewhere else if they want

john
And why does Orange forbid the word g@y in comments? they have used it plenty in this story.

simon calvert
Because they're G@Y

I dont see why they had to have a blanket ban on churches, they have already put in the clause that no organistation should be forced to marry them against their will , so that should have covered any Churches who did not want to do this, there are many Vicars etc who were willing to perform the marriages and should have been given the chance. Personally, if I was G** I would not have wished to marry in Church anyway as I never go where Im not wanted!

Ha ha Sky news managed a funny using the word "Unveiled" in the news item Ho ho ho ha ha ha tee hee

simon calvert
I have no opposition to g@y marriage, however, if a religious institution does not want to carry this out, how can you practice with them and respect them and want to get married by them etc... Set up another religious church or whatever, you can make bundles of cash and make your own laws too... Simple.

El Bubsio
Right, out of interest, can anyone actually tell me where in the bible it specifically condemns g@y marriage? I'm not looking for a passage that says man and woman get married, as using that as a condemnation is akin to believing I hate every other fruit just because I say I like apples. A proper, in context quote that forbids it please.

Windows Live User
More in interest where does the bible mention the marriage of G@ys when it refers to marriage between man and wife?

Gordon Berry
With this legislation I think Cameron si trying to make the Tories unelectable

Windows Live User
I would expect that if it is down to the length of a petition, then if the country was motivated the list produced in opposition to G@y marriage will be far longer than 500,000. Not sure why all this clamouring to appease 1.5% of the nation. Somebody must be pulling some strings on Cameron I wonder if this will be in the Tory Manifesto at the next election? As I believe Tory backbenchers will be successful in protecting marriage at this time, as surely Cameron wont turn his usual deaf ear on this occasion? It would certainly be the downfall Cameron's government should be focusing on the major issues facing Britain and this certainly is not one of them, or is he being forced to attend to this?

Isn't it about time this country finally separated the church and the state? A marriage should be a legal framework for two people and religion should have no place in it. If you want to get a wizard to cast his luck on you while it waves a bunch of possessed daffodils over your head so be it - just don't ask me to acknowledge it as a legal marriage - keep that for the law and not a corruptible bunch of historically biggoted (until it suits) non-life-experiencers.
