Mum Shoots Dead Four Kids Then Kills Herself

A mother shot and killed her four children before turning a gun on herself in a small town in Florida.

The victims, aged 12, 13, 15 and 17, were shot by their mother Tonya Thomas at their house in Brevard County, 15 miles from Nasa's Kennedy Space Centre.

A neighbour told police that three of the children had banged on his door shortly before 5am on Tuesday before Thomas, 33, ordered them home.

Shortly afterward police were called after reports of gunfire.

Police spokesman Tod Goodyear said when officers arrived they found a 17-year-old girl lying in the front garden of the house. She was declared dead at the scene.

More shots were then heard from inside the house as an armed response unit arrived.

Mr Goodyear added: "They heard shots as the Swat team arrived. They put together two entry teams, entered the residence through the back... and in clearing the residence found four persons fatally wounded inside."

Mr Goodywar said it was the worst murder case he could recall in Brevard County since six people were shot dead in 1987, two of them police officers.

Police had been called to the house on several occasions in the past. The 15-year-old, a boy, was arrested last month charged with attacking his mother.

Thomas' husband, the father of all of the children, moved out of the house a few months ago, Mr Goodyear said.

Tuesday's incident was the second deadly shooting in Port St John in the past week. Six murders were committted in Brevard County in 2011.

This is just tragic news. We are seeing similar incidents far too often in today's news. Can life get that bad that you feel this is the only way out?

Very tragic news, [Mike d] Florida is a beautiful place to live, This is a one off! How many incidents have been reported over here in the UK involving Children, Far too many!!! Considering the population of America v the UK and maybe you can understand that the UK is not a safe or great place for children to grow up in.

Are you aware that over 75% of all global school shootings for the past decade have occurred in the US. That the US has twelve times the youth murder/capita rate of the UK. That the US has a teen pregnancy rate which is 58% higher than the UK's. And that the US has higher rates of child abuse, depression, obesity and prescription drug use (ritalin/adderall) and illegal drug use than the UK. The UK isn't perfect but it doesn't compare to the US.

I think, these news stories seem to be happening more often, simply due to the increase in global population. Also, I've been trying to care for my mum for ten years and I don't know how anyone can possibly look after six people. She would have had to do enough shopping for six people including almost adult children. She would have had to prepare six breakfasts, six dinners in the evening, perhaps. Forty-two dinners per week. Eighty-eight including breakfasts. 6 * 2 = 12 lots of washing dishes each day combined with taking children to school, possibly and possibly fetching them home. On TV there are many programs showing people just can't cope looking after so many children. The children themselves can't seem to put up with that lifestyle, either. How can she possibly be expected to look after six people? ... Cleaning the house every day for six people? ... All those clothes to wash. Six lots of bed linen to wash? How many washing lines would that take? ...
