Music Executive Held Hostage With Machete
A former music industry executive has been taken to hospital after authorities say his girlfriend's suicidal ex-husband held him and the woman hostage with a machete.
Police say Jerry Sharell, who has worked with the Eagles, Linda Ronstadt and Motley Crue, was cut several times on the neck during the five-hour ordeal.
He is listed in critical but stable condition, officials said.
Police Sergeant Alex Kim told City News Service the couple was taken hostage on Sunday at the woman's Woodland Hills home.
The woman eventually was able to get away and call police.
Arriving officers ordered the suspect to drop the machete, but the man slit his own wrists before he complied.
He also had a scalpel, officials said.
"He asked his ex-wife to watch as he killed himself," Sgt Jeff Nuttall told KCBS-TV.
The suspect was taken to hospital in a critical but stable condition.
A neighbour told KCBS-TV the suspect arrived on a motorcycle and pulled out a machete and a bouquet of flowers before entering the house.
The names of the woman and the suspect were not released.
She had a restraining order against her former husband, police said.
Mr Sharell, whose career dates back to the 1970s, hosts the Sundays With Sinatra programme on Los Angeles radio station KJazz.
He previously managed Asylum Records, worked in talent marketing at the radio network Westwood One, and headed video distribution at MCA, according to his bio on the KJazz website.
