British Woman Gives Birth On New York Street

A British woman gave birth to a healthy baby girl on the pavement in Manhattan after she was unable to hail a taxi in time.

Polly McCourt, 39, realised she was going into labour while in her apartment in the Upper East Side and rushed downstairs to the street.

But minutes later she gave birth to Ila Isabelle McCourt as passersby came to her aid.

Mrs McCourt, originally from Black Bourton in Oxfordshire, said: "I went downstairs to get a taxi and my water broke, right in the front foyer of the building.

"A lady walked out five metres in front, and hailed a cab and got into it. And I went 'no, that's my cab, I want that cab'.

"Unfortunately I didn't manage to make it into a cab and I went 'uh oh'."

Husband Cian McCourt, 40, was stuck in traffic when he got the call and ran along 3rd Avenue, when he spotted a crowd of people on the corner, surrounding his wife.

The couple decided to name their little girl after a woman called Isabelle who stopped to help Mrs McCourt and gave her a coat to keep warm as she waited for medical staff.

They are now back home with their new daughter and two other children.
