Hospitals Set To Increase Private Treatment

NHS hospitals could earn up to half their income by treating private patients under plans announced by the Government.
The cap on income generated by private procedures is currently limited to a few percent, but that could rise to 49%.
Conservatives say the money will go into NHS services but critics argue the move will lengthen waiting lists and lead to a 'two-tier' health system.
The move is expected to cause more friction within the coalition with a senior Liberal Democrat warning it was part of an ideological drive that many in the party would oppose, The Times said.
Lib Dem MP John Pugh, who chairs the party's backbench committee on health policy, told the paper there were serious underlying problems with the plans.
He added: "The Conservatives over a period of time appear to want to substantially reduce the role of the state."
But Health Secretary Andrew Lansley insisted the reforms would benefit patients. He said: "Lifting the private income cap for foundation hospitals will directly benefit NHS patients.
"If these hospitals earn additional income from private work that means there will be more money available to invest in NHS services.
"Furthermore services for NHS patients will be safeguarded because foundation hospitals core legal duty will be to care for them."
Labour claimed the plans showed the Prime Minister was determined to mirror health care provision operated in the US.
Shadow Health Secretary Andy Burnham said: "This surprise move, sneaked out just before Christmas, is the clearest sign yet of David Cameron's determination to turn our precious NHS into a US-style commercial system, where hospitals are more interested in profits than people.
"With NHS hospitals able to devote half their beds to private patients, people will begin to see how our hospitals will never be the same again if Cameron's health bill gets through Parliament."
what do you think?

Good to see Tory policy not influenced by the major private medical companies and associated individuals who donate to party coffers.. Oh,wait...

As soon as those cretins started talking about austerity measures and cuts i predicted that we would witness the death of the NHS. Looks like i was right

stephen
look at what the Tory party have done since 1979. privatised gas water electricity etc. shut all big industries down. created mas unemployment stopped building council houses took 75% of rents of the councils now the country has mas homelessness took all services away . now they are going too privatise the NHS .next they will privatise schools . when will the people of this country learn the Tory party only represent the rich

Jenny Molloy
I think all the parties are the same. Until someone from the real world takes the helm it won't get any better

another great opportunity taken, providing health care for the wealthy, and making money at the same time, the less well off will go back to the good old days where disease and ill health cut out old and the jobless and population growth thus reducing inflation

Eventually it will become like the USA ... no insurance .... no treatment!

Citizen Lucien
Instead of giving Thatcher a state funeral, (which has been agreed by the way..... And by herself), we should have a state funeral for the NHS. What did you expect from Conservatives and Liberal Democrats?

Citizen Lucien
Stephen, I'm not bent by any stretch of the imagination, but I have an immense desire to kiss you. Come the good day when all good citizens will sing "Thank you very much, thank you very much, that's the most wonderful thing that anyone has ever done for me" I'll hope to be with you and I will give you a big ruddy kiss on your smacker!!!

This is the usual politicians con. Mention a figure that everyone thinks is outrageous (49%), finally introduce something about half that (25%?) and everyone thinks 'Oh that's not so bad;. Every operation done on a prvate patient means an operation not done on a NHS patient - unless as if by magic the hospitals can increase their capacity by 50% (we can dream).

stephen
well well don't see any Tory voters on here .

Citizen Lucien
Hey Stephen, I love you! I'm straight and just wanted to appreciate your comment. Sorry that Orange are so biased

citizen orange have removed my comment why? . what happened too freedom of speech

Citizen Lucien
According to Orange, we cannot say Ray (beginning with a G). We cannot say Romosexual (beginning with an H), we cannot say Roof (beginning with a P). So, according to Orange, we cannot use the English language. Now my friends, click on the link to terms and conditions on the link just to the top right of this post and see if you find what terms and conditions of this forum actually are. Let me remind Orange that this is a country of free speech, if you have terms and conditions relating to this forum, please have the courage to publicise them. If not, then please close this forum down, as you are not fit to run a forum in a democratic society where we have free speech.

Citizen Lucien
I'm here Stephen, you said nothing wrong. It is the bias of Orange. See below

Brian Robert Woolgar
Other countries in Europe have exellent public health services.Britain is supposed to be 7th richest country in the world. What a sick joke.

Citizen Lucien
sadly, because ORANGE have not the courage of their convictions to make their terms and conditions of the forum readily available, we can only assume that they are extermely theist in their thinking. It would not surpise me one bit if they were orthodox catholic or exreme muslim. I will be more than justified to continue to think that until, when you click on the above link, terms and conditions, you are actually taken to a link that clearly states what the terms and conditions of this forum actually are.
