Nitrogen Cocktail Teen Has Stomach Removed

A teenager has had her stomach removed to save her life after drinking a cocktail containing liquid nitrogen.

Gaby Scanlon began feeling breathless after consuming the drink at Oscars Wine Bar, in Lancaster city centre, during a night out with friends on Thursday.

The 18-year-old then developed severe stomach pain and was taken to Lancaster Royal Infirmary at about 11pm.

Medics diagnosed the girl with a perforated stomach and were forced to perform emergency surgery to remove the organ, Lancashire Police said.

The girl, from Heysham, remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition, the force added.

Officers have launched an investigation into the incident.

A number of witnesses at the night spot where the drink was bought are being interviewed by police and the licensed premises has stopped selling drinks containing the chemical.

Liz Nicholls, the principal at Ms Scanlon's school, the Ripley St Thomas Church of England Academy, described the teenager as "one of our most hardworking and mature students".

"Gaby is one of our most hardworking and mature students who had simply gone out for a quiet birthday celebration," she said.

"Our whole school community is shocked and upset at what has happened. Our thoughts and prayers are with Gaby, her family and her friends, who are obviously upset and distressed."

A Lancashire Police spokeswoman said: "Medical opinion is that this would have proved fatal had the operation not been carried out urgently.

"The investigation is still in its early stages and we are still interviewing witnesses to establish the full facts.

"The premises involved have fully co-operated with all agencies and have suspended drinks involving liquid nitrogen."

Oscars Wine Bar said in a statement: "This unfortunate incident is part of an ongoing police investigation and as such we cannot make any comments other than to say that we are tremendously concerned for the person involved and our heartfelt best wishes go to them and their family at this distressing time."

Lancaster city council said environmental health officers attended the premises with police officers on Friday afternoon.

"As a precaution and with the full cooperation of the owners of the premises, using powers under the Health & Safety at Work Act, the city council formally prohibited the bar from serving drinks containing liquid nitrogen," it said in a statement.

"The council also took possession of the liquid nitrogen equipment on the premises.

"When Lancashire Constabulary concludes its investigation the council expects to take the lead role and continue investigating what happened and whether offences were committed."

Hope the young lady recovers from the surgery. I can not believe the number of websites showing how to make this drink without any warnings about how long to leave it before consumption or other safety advice.

U dont need safety advice its quite simple its a chemical found in Labs they handle it with goggles thick gloves and clamps so they dont come into contact. So surely thats safety advice enough TO LEAVE IT ALONE !!!!

Gengis. Who needs chemical effects. For a gas to become liquid it needs to be very cold and the figure of -196 C is being talked about. The cold will do enough damage at that temp without the need for a chemical reaction

It wasn't a yoof selling it was it? She was in a public bar, not taking dodgy substances in some back alley... let's have a bit more collective responsibility here, rather than kicking the girl who's down!

Ok gengiske1227 If you are in the habit of asking what's in the food at evey place you eat and what's every drink you but then either you're alittle odd or you go to some very dodgy places ! EVERYTHING on sale should be safe and legal.. my point is this certainly wasn't thre first of those two things. (Do they still sell babycham by the way?!)

Me thinks that they need to bring chemistry back to schools, instead of stupid subjects. This is all about brain cells and I'm not sure this may of been lacking on deciding if you should drink such a thing. She should be okay, but she will not have a normal life now. All this for a bit of fun and liquid nitrogen ain't fun.

For THIRTY years, I've been watching on the television, lots and lots of programs showing liquid nitrogen being used to FREEZE roses into solid lumps of ice then they are broken with a hammer. I don't believe anybody doesn't know how dangerous liquid nitrogen is. If they don't know, then they should. Some complete idiots use liquid nitrogen on the television to instantly freeze ice cream. They do that because they are not scientific experts so much as complete idiots.

Apart from common sense stopping anyone drinking a drink with liquid nitrogen in it, how did she manage to swallow it?. If you put a liquid that is at 196 derees below zero into your warm mouth the result would be instant boiling and huge quantities of gas which you would spit out. Also logic would say if you mixed liquid nitrogen in a drink it would freeze it solid and you would have to wait untill it thawed out to drink it. I think it is more likely they put dry ice in the drink and she swallowed a lump.

Who is to say she wasn't already half cut when she saw bright colours etc and thought 'lets have some of that'? We've all been there at some point in our lives but it is very wrong for something as lethal as that to be sold over the counter in a drink! Poor girl is more than likely going to have to be fed in a tube into her stomach or equally have a bag to empty it. There should be some big balls on the block for the chop over this. Yes, it was her decision but NO it should not of been for sale

Those who are claiming silly child should stop and think. Heston on TV uses this gas on his way out cooking then you have the fact that one expects (or more correctly assumes) that when you buy a drink at a licensed premises it is safe - perhaps even the licensee had made a wrong assumption. Hindsight is a wonderful thing. It is however so sad for the lass. We should be looking at some of these cocktails as to possible effects.
