Northern Lights Spectacle Filmed From Space

The International Space Station has captured some spectacular pictures of the aurora borealis - the colourful natural phenomenon also known as the Northern Lights.

The time-lapse imagery was released by the European Space Agency.

It gives a rare view from above, as the space station flies over the green and through the purple and red lights of the aurora.

The effect is caused by collisions between electrically charged particles from the Sun as they enter the earth's atmosphere.
