Officer Seizes 15-Inch Knife From Stairwell

A police officer has won plaudits from the public for confiscating a 15-inch knife from a group of youths in southeast London.

Metropolitan Police Sergeant David Hunt seized the blade from the stairwell of a housing estate in Southwark after the youths fled the scene - but did not catch the person who was holding it.

After posting a photo on Twitter of one of his colleagues holding the weapon, Sgt Hunt tweeted: "Just seized this knife maybe saved another life? Unfortunately didn't catch the youth carrying it.

"This sort of thing is very unusual for my ward.

"The worrying thing is why did they have it in the first place?"

The recovery of the weapon has prompted a flurry of relieved responses on Twitter.

@Jan_208 wrote: "That's absolutely horrendous! Thanks for getting it off of the streets. Have a safe night."

@ChristinaMGill tweeted: "That could take out quite a few lives. Let's get rid of stuff like this in the neighborhood."

And there were others who expressed their shocked at the size of the weapon.

"That isn't a knife! That's a damn sword! Look at it," tweeted @Sec_MiddxIPA.

While @skibum999 wrote: "That's not a knife, it's a b***** cutlass! Why the hell would you carry something like that about?!"
