Ohio School Janitors To Carry Handguns

A rural Ohio school district will arm its janitors with handguns to protect students in the wake of last month's shooting at a Connecticut elementary school.

The school board has voted unanimously to have the four custodians at the district's nursery and main school begin carrying handguns, the Toledo Blade reports.

In a message to parents on the district's website, Superintendent Jamison Grime said the school board decided to arm staff in order to "substantially enhance and strengthen our security efforts."

The janitors - all men - will buy their own guns. Teachers and others with direct supervision of students will not be armed.

School board president Larry Martin said the district began looking into arming employees six months ago.

Amid concerns that the decision was made without parental input, Mr Grime said staff will not begin carrying guns until they complete a two-day course in March.

The Buckeye Firearms Association said more than 1,000 educators across Ohio have applied for its armed teacher training programme, but it is unclear whether any other school districts have approved similar programmes.

Meanwhile, in Texas Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst has called for state-funded, specialised firearms training for teachers and administrators to prevent school shootings.

Mr Dewhurst said that under his optional plan school districts could nominate who they want to carry weapons on campus.

The training would include how to react, both technically and emotionally, in an active shooter situation.

And in Utah, a gun rights group held a course last month to teach 200 local teachers how to handle concealed weapons.

The debate over gun control in the US has been re-ignited in the wake of the Newtown school shooting, where a man killed 20 young children and six staff members with an assault rifle in Connecticut last month.

This has got to be the most stupid decision ever. This makes the school even more of a target.....why?.....Because what better way to get even more press than the last nut job than to take out a school and it's armed janitor....Just as stupid as the Marine who has decided to stand un-armed in front of his local school to "protect" them.......The typical American logic of solving the gun problem....throw more guns at it. Won't be long til "Mom" will be waving little Jonny off to school with his sandwiches and a 9mm.

I actually disagree with this idea for a number of reasons: 1. The general intelligence level of school janitors is unlikely to reach even that of an average teacher. 2. This judgment will probably lead to numerous janitors accidentally shooting people. 3. They will be wandering around schools with armed weapon systems instead of concentrating on cleaning duties AND, most importantly of all, history has shown janitors have a tendency to go berserk from the stress of looking after so many children in schools. 4. The janitors themselves might end up being the ones who go crazy and start shooting school kids for no reason and 5. Why do they trust school janitors, anyway? Has everybody forgotten about Holly and Jessica Wells?

My mum was a janitor! I wouldn't want her and her friends to have been wandering around schools with a gun. I also had the idea, how difficult would it be for a school child to remove the gun from the janitor and use it himself or even herself? It does happen. Criminals have even taken guns from the police and they often take them from security guards. A janitor could be leaning over, cleaning a floor, then some child just hits him on the head to steal his gun?

2 day course?! When i joined up i did 12 weeks firearms training in Basic! That's before any specialist training! It's not about pulling the trigger, it's about knowing WHEN to pull it.

More guns=more deaths. America will never learn, never realize how messed up it is becoming. Second amendment rights are a shambles. I am not looking forward to more Newtowns and more Columbines this year
