Oz the Great and Powerful maintains top spot at nation's box office

Disney movie Oz The Great And Powerful has worked its magic on the nation's box office again after scoring the top spot for the second consecutive weekend.

Sam Raimi's The Wizard of Oz prequel, starring James Franco and Michelle Williams, pulled in £2.6 million, easily holding off competition from runner-up Side Effects, which had takings of £474,600.

James McAvoy's new thriller debuted at three with £460,250 in ticket sales, while animated adventure Wreck-It Ralph (£430,000) and Jennifer Lopez and Jason Statham's crime movie Parker (£310,000) rounded out the top five.

It was a disappointing few days for cinema bosses as the top 15 films only earned £6.4 million, a significant drop from £9.2 million last weekend.
