Paralysed Girl, Six, Wins Payout Worth Millions

A six-year-old girl who was left brain damaged and paralysed by a dangerous driver has been awarded a multi-million pound payout.

Cerys Edwards, from Sutton Coldfield, was a baby when the car she was travelling in with her parents was hit by Antonio Boparan Singh in 2006.

Singh, who was 19 at the time, and is heir to a £130m fortune, was driving his parent's Range Rover in excess of 70mph in a 30mph zone, on the wrong side of the road.

Singh's insurers will pay Cerys a lump sum of £5m, plus £450,000 a year for the rest of her life, which her lawyer estimates could be worth between £10-£15m.

"Every penny of this award is needed for Cery's care in the future," explained the family's solicitor Richard Langton.

"She has a 24-hour package of carers and nurses looking after her because she's paralysed and brain damaged, she can't move and is ventilator dependent so it's not a lottery winning, it's money that's needed for her care.

"Today the judge made the very telling point that no amount of money can actually turn back the clock or make a difference to Cerys' injuries but at least it gives the parents security for the future. They know whatever happens there'll be enough funds to pay for Cerys' care."

Speaking outside Birmingham's High Court, Mr Langton told how Cerys' parents began a campaign after Singh was sentenced to 21 months in prison following the head-on crash, but served only six months.

"After that the parents felt the maximum sentence for dangerous driving was just inadequate and even the judge in the case said so," he said.

"So they got together a petition of 30,000 people and took it to the Home Secretary who promised to change the law.

"In the last few months, an act of parliament has been put forward and they're going to increase sentences to five years, arguably still not enough but it's going in the right direction."

what do you think?

6 months, what a joke, he has sentenced this little girl for life time of pain, and he gets six months. You can't class it as a accident, he was obviously dilibretly driving his car too fast and recklessly, he had intention to brake the law, with that he has ruined a family, so he is guilty of so much more at least attampted murder, he should be enslaved to this family for the rest of his life. Hope this shows all the people that like driving fast what it can cause. Poor girl. The world is not fair

He should have got 15yrs.minimum in prison and made to forfeit his inheritance for the care this little girl will need for the rest of her life.Instead he gets off virtualy scot free and the likes of me and millions of others will have our premiums increased. The law is and always will be in this country AN ASS.

This is good news for Cerys and her parents at least finding peace of mind for her financial future. She has made improvements and whilst she will never be the same little girl I can only pray that she does continue to improve. This idiots sentence was and remains an absolute disgrace and his families behaviour in not supporting the Edwards with thier own money. He will live a comfortable lifestyle on family money in good health, where is the justice?

How many more of these disgusting cases are we going to have to read about, before it FINALLY gets through to the powers that be that this country is nothing but A JOKE, especially among the rest of the world?? We are rapidly becoming a backward, third world country, due to incidences such as these. The majority of crimes - especially driving related crimes - in this country are carried out by foreigners, either legal or lillegal, who have no licence, insurance, tax, etc. read your local papers and you will know this. The justice system in this country seriously needs to grow a backbone and apply the same rules TO EVERYONE.

That's such a generalised comment. Crimes are committed by all, there is good and bad in all walks of life. People you see as foreigners are British citizens, you may not like that but it's fact.

You miss the point Melanie - this driver has a licence and Insurance - that's why Cerys got such a deserved award - the insurance company paid

When will everyone understand the basics - a motor accident and you are insured and to blame - your motor insurer pays - a motor accident and you are not insured (and someone is injured) - the MIB pays. Whichever - we all contribute by way of increased motor insurance premiums. It doesn't matter if the driver is rich or poor, black or white (and that's not racist it's a fact). The 'criminal' aspect ie going to prison for what ever length of time is a separate issue. Insurers don't pay for the criminal aspect - they do however have to pay for the negligence aspect. These are two completely separate issues - rightly or wrongly

About time the family was given money for Cerys. If Antonio Boparan Singh had any conscience, he would have coughed up the money on his own without needing a judgement against him to pay for the consequences of what he did. He has acted in a shameful manner from start to finish.
