Peru: Police Arrest Members Of 'Robbery Gang'
Police in Peru have arrested alleged members of a criminal gang who were taking advantage of the capital's congested streets to steal from cars stuck in traffic.
Police video shows thieves stealing from vehicles in Lima.
The raiders suddenly attacked the vehicles - opening the doors or sticking their hands through open windows - before running away.
They operated along the busy streets of Junin and Huanuco and were known to even steal from cars driving slowly.
"I was driving with the window down and there was traffic," said Aclelia Perez, who was among the victims.
"The guy took advantage of it to stick his hand in the window and take my purse where I had my money and cell phone."
Police official Raul Moreno presented some of the suspects to the media and suggested they would get stiff sentences - which he said helped deter crime.
"The levels of crime are not out of control. That's also because we have drastic laws. Here in Peru we have life sentences," he said.
Police confiscated a homemade gun from one of the suspects, who were arrested on Monday.
