Photos Of Young Queen In 1940s Pantos Released
Pictures of the Queen performing in costume in private royal pantomimes as a teenager are going up for auction.
The photos show a 15-year-old Princess Elizabeth taking on roles at Windsor Castle alongside her younger sister Margaret.
In December 1941 the royal played Prince Florizel in Cinderella, while Princess Margaret - then just 11 - was in the title role.
The pantos were performed in front of an audience in the Waterloo Chamber at the castle over four Christmases during the Second World War.
In 1942 the show was Sleeping Beauty, with the future queen playing Prince Salvador and Margaret performing the Fairy Thistledown role.
The following year saw a production of Aladdin, with Princess Elizabeth in the starring lead and her sister as Princess Roxana.
The shows were put on to raise money to aid the war effort and help service personnel.
The photos, which have not been made public before, were signed by both princesses.
They are being sold as part of an archive collected by Cyril Woods, who was a star pupil at the Royal School in Windsor and acted in the pantos.
He struck up a lasting friendship with the Queen and worked for the Crown Estate office before his death in 2001.
The pictures will be auctioned at Dominic Winter auctioneers in Gloucestershire next week.
