Pilot Lands Jet On A Stool After Malfunction
A US Marine Corps pilot had to land on a stool after his jet's front landing gear malfunctioned.
Captain William Mahoney took off from the USS Bataan in his AV-8B Harrier aircraft and quickly realised something was wrong.
After slowing down, Capt Mahoney hovered above the ship and began communicating with the deck in order to figure out what to do.
That is when the idea of landing the nose of the aircraft on the stool was suggested.
After coming in to 20ft above the deck, Capt Mahoney set the jet to idle and it dropped, bouncing slightly before the front came to a rest on the large stool.
The deck of the USS Bataan, part of the US Sixth Fleet, was evacuated in case anything went wrong during the incident, which happened earlier this month.
Afterwards, crew members rushed out to congratulate him.
Capt Mahoney said: "It was a pretty big relief - I didn't realise how much I was shaking until I got out of the aircraft."
