Police: Madeleine McCann May Still Be Alive
Scotland Yard has announced that missing Madeleine McCann may still be alive - as an artist's impression of what she may look like now is released.
The Metropolitan Police issued a statement about its conclusion after conducting an investigative review into the case.
The image released shows Madeleine as a nine-year-old, as the fifth anniversary of her disappearance approaches.
The police statement said: "As a result of evidence uncovered during the review they now believe there is a possibility Madeleine is still alive and are appealing for anyone who is able to provide direct information as to her whereabouts to contact the team."
Madeleine vanished on May 3, 2007 during a family holiday at a resort in Portugal's Praia da Luz.
A huge hunt was launched after she went missing while her parents Kate and Gerry dined with friends nearby but she has never been found.
Her parents, both doctors who live in Rothley, Leicestershire, have battled to retain the case's high profile.
The investigative review started in May 2011 under the leadership of the then commissioner, Sir Paul Stephenson.
A murder team within the Homicide and Serious Crime Command conducted the review and the team worked in close collaboration with a senior investigating officer from Portugal's Policia Judaria.
"Throughout the course of the review officers have been in close contact with the McCann family who have been assigned a family liaison officer as is standard in accordance with national family liaison policy," Scotland Yard said.
"Officers are now methodically going through that material which they believe amounts to around 40,000 pieces of information equating to approximately 100,000 pages."
British detectives travelled to Portugal several times as part of the investigation.
"The intention is to identify from that material investigative opportunities which we will then present to the Portuguese authorities who retain primacy for the investigation," police said.
"Officers have so far identified around 195 such opportunities within the historic material, and are also developing what they believe to be genuinely new material."
Police added: "The second point of appeal today is in relation to those who were at the resort of Praia da Luz between April 28 and May 3, 2007.
"If you were either on holiday or in residence in the resort during this period, particularly in the vicinity of the Ocean Club, and you have not been spoken to by police either here or in Portugal then please call us on 0800 096 1011 if you are within the UK."

what do you think?
it would be wonderful if she were found and reunited with her Family, such a terrible world we live in what awful beings some humans are :-(
That investigation was flawed from the start. I really hope that she is still alive. But I will always blame the parents for this. You never never leave a child on its own in your own country, nevermind abroad. All this because they wanted to go out for a drink and meal. They should have taken it in turns with the other people they were with. They have to live with their quilt for ever.
Agree why couldn't they have invited their friends into the apartment for a meal or even a takeout if they didn't feel like cooking. Questions i'm sure they've now asked themselves 100 times.
Not for any of us to judge, im sure they are living a nightmare for the rest of their lives.....
lets hope they find her and bring some much needed closeure for the family. this must be like a living hell for them. a, praying they find there much wanted daughter.xxxxx <3

Just anothe false hope ??
Agree with you 100% Tina - you never leave your child/children alone no matter what. They are they most precious gift you could ever be given - and they should have known that and appreciated it !
I still hope and pray Maddy WILL ! be found, I still feel that when someone just someone feel;s that gut reaction on seeing what they think may be that little English girl ,they have the courage of thier conviction, and approach her and take a good look and maybe just call her by her name to see if there is a reaction of any kind ,I agree they did wrong leaving the children in the first place ,but they really are paying the highest price for thier action's ,so please if there's any chance of helping this family please do take that extra step.

The fact that she was taken at all was more than opportunist. Such things need to be planned in advance. I believe that inside information about the age and number of children at the aparthotel was made available via a member of staff who had access to the booking information through either a reception job or cleaning rota job which in turn would provide access to the accommodation with a copy key. I don't believe the matter was investigated from this aspect by, for example; checking the home computers of ancillary staff for evidence of child trading communications. A cross reference with any links with boat owners too or maybe a partner has a boat. . .The investigation seemed to focus on the McCanns as culprits !
Shame on those of you trying to punish this poor family further by your cruel unthoughtful, unloving and uncaring words of blame, I pity you, you must have something missing in your lives. I think it should be fairly obvious to anyone who can articulate a comment that this poor family will have obviously given themselves more than a good beating mentally in the years that have passed over what if's and should be's. Question: as a society should we live in fear all our lives or trust and have faith in society. If you're a person who is going to mistrust society perhaps you should never venture out, maybe the restaurant you are going to visit will be bombed, maybe the guy your standing next to at the bar is mentally unhinged and going to stab you. Maybe someone will drive erratically and cause you to crash your car. The alternative is to live in some form of harmony with trust and faith in our fellows and help those that are hurting heal with love. What can you do to help the McCanns instead of pouring more negativity in? I intend to print some pictures of artists impressions now and put them up locally. If others do this there is a chance we can bring about a miracle. It's a small thing but every little helps. :-) I hope the McCanns, get closure so at least they can move on with their lives one way or another. To live in limbo from one day to the next cannot be pleasant to say the very least. My heart goes out to you and my prayers and thoughts are with you. I hope you find your daughter alive and well very soon.
Well said Warren.
I also understand that Maddy has one eye a different colour to the other and that some one spotted her with a man at a transport / motorway cafe 4 years back in Holland. The point being that the picture does not depict a girl with odd eye colours
I truely hope that this little girl will be found. But children go missing everyday, you only have to look at what poor Ben Needham's parents have gone through for the past 20yrs. Thoughts are with the McCann's
Somebody Please tell Kate & Jerry there was and is only one man through means who could or would be able to find Madeleine that man is Mr Putin if he would agree, PLEASE TELL HER To Least make contact, they have tried averyone elso including the Pope so why not try.
Reckless abandonment by the parents springs to mind. A criminal offence if you live on a council estate and are unemployed!
Don't be silly. I can well understand how in the confines of a complex and going back to check every half an hour whilst being a stones throw away that it would be alright to slip out. Trouble is you would think to check if one of the children was awake and wanting something not that somebody was going to break in and take one of them. It was no different to using the chalet round service at holiday camps.
Have they worked how to tell her how they lost her in the first place if they do get her back. Lets hope they find her alive and well anyway.
All this media coverage for Madelaine McCann, but what about BEN NEEDHAM who went missing in Greece(i think) wheres his media coverage & the torment his family go through everyday! The truth is the McCanns left 3 children unsupervised (under the age of 5) alone, whilst they went out to enjoy a child free night, in my opinion that constitutes child neglect so why have they not been dealt with in accordance to British law?
That's right Caroline, kick them while they're down. Of course you're entitled to your opinion. They obviously haven't suffered enough yet. A corrupt and incompetent Portuguese ex policeman is making a fortune from writing about this case. Maybe if he had done his job more efficiently in the first place Maddie and her family would have been re-united long ago.
I hope that Maddie is alive and well found soon anr reunited with her family and those that took her pay the full penalty for their crime. Portugal is a lovely but backward country despite it being within the EU and I doubt that they have in place adequate punishment for this. They certainly do not have a police force worthy of the name or Maddie would have been found long ago and her family would be intact and happy. Portugal like Greece, Spain and most of the more recent EU states are third world countries trying to pretend to be otherwise. Nice places for a holiday but lets not pretend that they are capable or even willing to extend the same protections to visitors or even their own people that the old european countries can. it is bad enough now but God help us if if the likes of Turkey or Albania are admitted. God bless Maddie, and I hope you are returned to your family in the very near future.
Brian, if you want to classify third world countries by how they protect their citizens, I suggest you look closer to home. Just one example: what protection did the UK government give Mr. Tappin against the US extradition request?
perhaps the moon is made of cheese .
Let's be honest if someone knew anything they would have gone to the police by now , The parents can't give up but something about this case stinks and god knows what happened to that poor child .
