Pope's Doves Attacked During Vatican Prayers

Two white doves released as a peace gesture by children standing with the Pope have been savaged by a crow and a seagull.

The attack was witnessed by tens of thousands of worshippers in St Peter's Square, where Pope Francis had earlier made an appeal for peace in Ukraine.

Moments after the youngsters released the white doves from a window at the Vatican's Apostolic Palace, the black crow and seagull swept down on them.

One dove lost feathers as it broke free from the gull, while the crow pecked repeatedly at the other bird.

It was not clear what happened to the doves after they flew away.
